What's the one thing you always order on a menu when you see it?

I'm up late watching cooking shows on YouTube, and it made me think about how there's that one dish I always order on a menu whenever I see it.
For me it'd have to be carpaccio, or beef tartare. Whenever I see it, I always get it. Every time I go some place new, if I see this on the menu, I'm always ordering it.
What about you guys? Are you guys the type to try something different every time, or is there the one thing you always order whenever you see it on a menu somewhere?

Nothing specific really fits that description, though when I go out to eat at a new place I tend to always go for the seafood. Fried crawfish, fried shrimp, whatever fish isn't catfish or tilapia (don't have a problem with either of them really, but there are always better options at restaurants) etc.
For the main dish if I'm not gonna get a steak or something "fancy" I'd probably never cook at home, I usually just get chicken fried steak.

Empanadas and bunuelos, specifically Colombian empanadas

Always order a coffee...If the coffee sucks at a place its a good impression on what the rest of the menu is like. If you cant get coffee right then you might as well quit.

Same, I tend to usually order seafood whenever I see it. Unless the place I'm dining at is not serving quality freshness, like if I'm at a diner or something, and I know the seafood is going to be all frozen and undesirable. Then I stay away.
Less commonly, I'll occasionally order some less common meats like lamb chops or rabbit or duck or quail or whatever. I don't understand why people go to restaurants and order pasta or something. It literally costs the restaurant not even 50 cents to make.
You should never order salad or pasta at a restaurant if you want to get value out of your dollar, since you're basically getting ripped off.
Unless it's a specific type of pasta that you can't acquire or easily make, like pad see ew or udon, or if the pasta is hand-made from scratch. But some basic shit like spaghetti with tomato sauce? Or salad with iceberg lettuce and ranch sauce? Total rip off.
Never ever order the edamame either at a Japanese restaurant. They always just use frozen edamame and some places don't even steam it properly, they simply microwave it and then salt it. Ordering edamame is the biggest rip-off.
The best items to order from a menu at a restaurant, in terms of value of your money, is fish or veal or certain cuts of meat.
Same reason I never understood why people go to a buffet and load up on shit like French fries and pancakes... that shit is dirt cheap! You catch me at a buffet, and I'm over grabbing all the crawfish, oysters, and crab legs.

That's so oddly specific, I can't imagine you come across too many restaurants that serve a fried chicken burger with egg on top. Is that like a regional thing to do that?
Now that you mention it though, whenever I go to fast food burger places I usually get the crispy chicken sandwich. I don't usually get the burgers.

I have been known to order a grilled ham and cheese alongside my normal meal sometimes just because its comfort food.

Usually fish, I like fish.
As far as cooking at home, I have been exploring ramen recently though, might try to get my family members on board to open our own ramen shop, I love cooking the noodles, I mean the real ones, not the cheapo ones. The other night I used 5 different species of wild mushrooms I picked (Clitocybe nuda, Marasmius oreades, Laetiporus sulphureus, Amanita muscaria var. guessowii, and Armillaria gallica) with some soy sauce, lots of garlic, some onion, stir fry veggies, sriracha, and some secret seasonings I wont reveal, then threw an egg on top.
Shits so good man, so good.
Everything was cooked to perfection.
But I usually order fish when I eat out.

Things I commonly order and why:
French Dip---If you can't make a good french dip, the rest of your menu is probably garbage too
Chicken Fried Steak---If its frozen-pre-packaged CFS, i won't be back.
Veal in any form---Many places just don't serve veal anymore, so if i see it on the menu, I'm gonna get that delicious tortured baby cow.
Biscuits and Gravy---the gravy is key here. If you can't make a decent sausage gravy, it seems unlikely that that rest of your breakfast shit is any good.
Meatloaf/Pot-roast---This is some comfort food right here. It better come with mashed potatoes and gravy too.

I looooove country gravy, that thick white sauce. When it's done right it's incredible.
I must be the only person that doesn't like meatloaf though. I just don't like ground beef whatsoever. It's the main reason I'm not a big burger eater either. I just don't understand why anybody would turn a cut of beef into ground anything.

do you cook much? I've got a chili recipe that works just as well with ground beef and pork as cubed beef and pork though you have to simmer longer with the cubes/chunks (which isn't really a bad thing)

I cook every day. I usually use combination ground pork and veal and turkey in my chili, a lot of the store-bought ground beef you buy at chain supermarkets is of no-good quality.
Every recipe out there that you can make using ground beef though, I feel like it's vastly improved when you use a real cut of beef instead and make something similar. Steak sandwich > burger... beef stew > chili... roast beef or pot-roast style beef > meatloaf, so on and so forth. I'd be interested in replacing ground beef wontons/dumplings with cubed beef and see if it improves any.
The only recipe I like ground beef is in meatballs, and even then it has to be heavily seasoned and full of flavor, because I'm just really not a fan of ground beef. For years as a kid I refused to eat burgers even, because I was so disgusted by the taste and texture of ground beef. And I still never fully became a fan of cheesesteaks.

when i do chunks in my chili, i usually sear(a little heavy) a porterhouse, trim it and cube it, and just throw the chunks in to simmer. in the same pan, i do the same thing with some pork shoulder, then trim, cube and simmer. I also add about half of the retained grease to the chili.

You actually use porterhouse for chili?
Isn't that kind of a waste of a porterhouse? I mean that's a really good cut. Usually people use chuck steak or a cheaper cut of meat for something that's going to be marinating in stew for that long. After it's been cooked in spices for that long the cheap beef ends up tasting not that much different as using an expensive cut.

fuck it if i'm not going ground, then i'm going all out. i want those cubes to melt.
to be honest though, its just as good with cheap ground beef and pork IMO. the other way is just a bunch more expense and work for the sake of saying i went all out.

Well I certainly hope you at least use the bones of the porterhouse when you make the base of your soup. Because all the flavor of the meat is in the bones.

Fish bones and head is a common way to make soup stock in Asia. Add some kelp and dried bonito flakes, and that's a typical Japanese soup base.
If the fish are small enough, like the size of tilapia or smaller, you can actually deep-fry the fish bones and eat them with a little salt. It's a delicious snack actually, full of calcium and healthy for you.
And if the fish is large enough, like with a yellowtail or salmon, you can actually grill or broil the entire head. The meat around the cheeks is very tender and succulent, is one of the best parts of the fish.

I know, I've been a fisherman since I was 3, was raised by a japanese-american step-father, and dated a girl from japan for 3 years.
Once when i was in Baja, the local fishermen caught a black seabass. It was probably upwards of 300 lbs. The cheeks on that thing were the size of dinner plates, and even the meat around the base of the fins was both substantial, and delicious. I felt a little guilty eating it because they really aren't sustainable, but hell, it was dead already so fuck it.

Crystal G said: Fish bones and head is a common way to make soup stock in Asia.

For me it kinda depends what specific restaraunt I've gone to. Like places known for their steak I love to order a steak (nice steakhouse), but if they have kick ass burgers it's a burger (good sports bar or something)
Italian places, usually pasta or pizza.

Beef Carpacio for me too!

If its just some generic restaurant like denny's Ill get whatever looks spicy, but if its a legit place with actual chefs I always go for something with shrimp in it. No specific dish since eating the same thing over and over is boring as fuck.

There's alot of foods I like to try but I always like to know where the closest good fish and chips to me is at all times. I don't even eat it much, it's just a comfort to me, so if I see it I have to try it just to see how it is.

At Umami Burger.... the manly burger... every time. I just can't get enough. It's the only thing I've ever ordered there in the like ~50 times I've been. They fucking nailed it It's one of those things that you can't really eat unless you are pretty hungry and have that craving that can only be satisfied with meaty grease.. it's so ungodly rich... but when you need it, it's like the most satisfying thing in the world. There's other burgers out there... sure... but there's no other Manly Burgers.. not that I've found. Just so fucking good.

I went to Umami Burger once, was completely underwhelmed, mainly because of the price. $14 for a burger that's not much bigger than a slider and doesn't even fill you up? I could easily eat 2 of those in one sitting. I can't justify spending $30 on burgers.

I think I got the standard Umami burger because I wanted to taste their signature burger. I don't remember exactly though.
I just remember eating it with a side of sweet potato fries and still being hungry after. I couldn't bring myself to order another burger for that price though, I think I went down the street to Wahoo's and ate some fish tacos.
Is the manly burger much bigger or something? Bigger buns and bigger patty and everything?

it's just got way more calories probably. Probably a metric shitton more. Same size burger but a dank ass beer cheddar cheese, huge ass chunks of bacon lardon and crispy salty fried onion rings, it's fucking umami as fuck.

If you like really hearty, calorie-heavy sandwiches, you should check out Black Market Bakery. It's right around where you're at.
Order the Southern Country breakfast sandwich. Comes with sausage, egg, cheese, and homemade country gravy. It's a delicious sandwich. They make their biscuits and gravy from scratch there.

The beaches are paved with halibut in the village i used to visit. Its funny because the locals are so used to eating prime seafood all the time that they are much more excited about some grilled chicken than lobster or fresh halibut.

Apparently back in the 1920's when lobster was dirt cheap and only poor people ate it, there was a prison in Maine that served lobster every night. The prisoners were so upset about being served lobster every night that they rioted.

Usually that is brought up in a debate on eating bugs, the people who want to convince you eating bugs is good, throw that out as an argument. I don't really care if people thought lobster was substandard food back then, you're never going to convince me bugs are as tasty as a big fat lobster tail that's been grilled. Keep your bugs, give me your lobster, everyone wins.

Well cockroaches are actually similar anatomically to lobsters. I'd eat some beetles, maybe even cockroaches as long as it was a farmed roach.
I would try it, I can imagine it's probably pretty crunchy. I heard grasshoppers taste like the tip of a fried chicken wing.
A few decades from now, lobsters will probably be extremely rare and expensive or even extinct. Certain types of bugs will probably make pretty decent lobster substitutes when that happens.

Burgers are something that I usually ignore on a menu because they are usually just a simple burger. When I do go to a place that takes pride in their "signature" burger or whatever you want to call it, then I will sometimes check it out. Theres a place in Portland called Nosh Kitchen Bar, they have the Nosh burger.
From their website " All animals are pasture raised, grass fed, and grain finished for the last 90 days of their beautiful lives. We use ground beef chuck, beef brisket, all-natural pork shoulder, house-cured bacon, fresh garlic and rosemary.
NOSH BURGER NOSH patty / blue cheese spread / roast garlic balsamic sauce / smoked bacon / fried farm egg / grilled brioche bun"
with carmelized onions and fucking bacon ground into all their beef, it's fucking awesome.

I have had a chocolate bar with ants in it, tasted like a nestles crunch, and also chocolate covered grasshoppers. They were good too. Those fucking scorpion suckers look gross though, I'm not doing that!
The only one that would gross me out are the worms or any type of larvae.
There's a company on the east coast that sells edible crickets, grasshoppers, and silkworm pupae chips. I could deal with all of them except the silkworm, I can just imagine biting into one of those and all this slime and jelly oozes out.
