[pics] Cotton fluff growing in petris from inoculating spores (not trich)

These are the questionable specimen growing in PDA :

Spores were scraped from foil to agar with sterile scalpel. Each print were from different vendors. Trich eventually turns green growing in petris and these do not resemble trich. A control petri was inoculated with drop of water and shows no growth. I doubt sterile technique is the cause. Is it possible there is not enough GE?

What makes you think that its not mycelium?

I thought it may be. But I'm pessimistic. Mycelium looks ropey and this is cottony. I think it may be aspergillus but that would mean every print I've received has aspergillus.

What are they suppose to be? Panaeolus mycelium are cottony not ropey. Some Cube mycelium are cottony, but i wouldn't think different prints would all be cottony.

Often you don't get that ropey look til you've done a few transfers, though that's not all there is to it. The nutrient density of your agar has an effect too, with less nutes causing your myc to crawl and sprawl out in search for more food.
I've had cultures that were almost always tomentose and a bit slow turn out to be beastly producers. I've had cultures that looked great on agar/grain but fruited like rubbish.
As far as your dishes go, do a few transfers from the cleanest/fastest leading edges. After a couple you'll definitely get a better idea of what you're working with. When cleaning up spores, the more transfers the better as you don't want to accidentally transfer only a mold colony as then that's the end of that. When you get better and telling apart what's what you can hunt out the ideal one or two transfers, but don't be afraid to snatch up 5 or 6. I premix my own agar and get it relatively cheap, I don't ever feel the urge to be stingy with it.

This is the most reasonable response. Thanks.
