Are we currently living in the golden age of TV shows? * 1
    #23728976 - 10/11/16 05:49 PM (7 years, 3 months ago)

Hollywood movies seem to have dropped down in quality in the last decade or so, but TV shows IMO have gone way up.

No matter which company (HBO, Netflix, Showcase, AMC, etc), almost every show is amazing. Every company has their gems. Some of these shows are so addictive that they affect my life lol. I have also noticed that first class actors are picking up a lot of roles lately. I would be surprised to see DiCaprio pick up a main role in a Scorcese directed Tv show. Back in the day, movie actor never went to TV. Going back to TV was admitting failure as a movie star. Now, it's the opposite it seems.

Do you agree?

I was talking about this recently; I do believe we're currently in a major upswing in the quality of TV shows.  They're certainly better now than any other time in my life.  Just so much amazing stuff any more.  I think I thank Breaking Bad for it, but I guess it really started in the early aughts with shows like The Wire and Arrested Development.  Also, Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu are doing big things.  Premium channels too.  Those factors are forcing cable TV to step it up.

Yeah I would say so, at least for American TV. A lot of earlier tv that people remember fondly is kinda shit if you look back it, lots of filler episodes to pad out a 26-episode season, and not as much of in the way of story arcs and that because they wanted people to be able to just jump in anywhere. Plus they would always try to milk as many seasons out of a show as they could, long past the point where they ran out of ideas.

I noticed some time ago the big movie actors are all appearing in tv series instead, i think theyre moving more to tv than movies as people watch them more so reach a greater audience? Movies and cinema nights seem to be on the down, i havent bothered with cinemas in years.

Yeah, there's some epic TV but movies... not so much. Movies are more of an instant gratification kind of thing where they don't need to pull the viewers' attention in because they can just do it one hit. TV requires better quality because if it's not good people will just stop watching it.

i gotta agree.

The production value of TV show is way up, movie quality!

One of my favorite shows was House M.D. Wow what a show, like mini movies. So good.

Now i watch The Walking Dead. Such a big production, that they gotta take breaks for recording more shows.

Seeing the behind the scenes is insane. So much goes into the show.

Im curious to see where it goes from here. I still think movies are still amazing thou, Jurrasic World, Divergent series, Pacific Rim, Star Wars was pretty decent overall i think, etc. Still awesome movies.

We might be on the verge of the golden age of TV if we're not there already. The quality has definitely gone way up overall but there have been plenty of terrible shows over the past few years as well. In the next 10-20 years I could see it getting more and more competitive forcing everyone to step up their game. With online streaming getting better and better maybe TV will have to get rid of ads, that would be amazing.

Actually rewatching GOT

Never really cared for TV, but there have been a few good shows the past few years.
I think a good show is much better than its equivalent movie, 2hrs isn't enough time to tell a story.

It does suck when a show drags on past its expiration though

Yeah I would say so... and we don't even have cable or watch our TV lol.
Torrent/netflix everything :cookiemonster: Or for everything else there's Youtube / Amazon Prime

There haven't been so many quality TV shows ever in my time of being alive. I mean there were always good ones.. but they were spread out.
Now it's like they are everywhere. Arrested Development.. GoT.. Breaking Bad.. Narcos.. The Wire.. Band of Brothers.. Rick and Morty.. Cosmos.. Human Planet..  Fullmetal Alchemist.. Stranger things.. just to name a couple
The density of good shows has definitely gone up and the quality of production and acting has astronomically as well. No longer are TV shows shoestring budget, B-grade crap.
Lots of these shows have millions and millions behind them and so much insane work goes into their production they rival or beat many movies. Not saying low budget shows can't be good too.. just it really shows how the tables have turned.

Plus the show format is much better suited for telling really long stories that don't fit in a movie, that's why series have become so insanely popular. You got a whole season to tell your story instead of trying to cram it into a 2-3hr film.
And plus beyond TV we have the whole Youtube... Liveleak... Twitch, thing. The choices have never been better really.

for entertainment yes but if you think breaking bad or AHS is the bread and butter you're really fucking stupid, a lot of stuff that happens in those shows is completely fabricated or doesn't make any sense at all

Ideas only matter to a certain extent.  Whatever show really nails its genre, and "works", will be watched.  Running out of ideas is not an issue.

Ill tell you what it does, takes money off people and gives to the bbc lol.

If you dont pay for a tv licence you can be arrested, more likely fined, they even have a tv licence van drives around to houses with no licence and can pick signal if you got a tv on, then your screwed
If you have a tv iPad or any other way to watch tv in your home, and its a rip off, doesnt go to all tv channels, it is ALL paid directly to the BBC and they have less adverts cos they get all the money.

I was reading mine to see ways around like ditch tv use ipad, nope anything that can pick up tv of any kind is now detailed in the licence, if you can watch, you need a licence.

Its a huge scam imo and its been made law in UK you have no choice, its about £145 a year atm i think. Allows you to legally watch a tv in your own home

I think one guy even got done as he had an aeriel connected, he said but iv no telly, they said well your aerial is connected so you have the 'means' to watch

Its light hearted fun with some serious stuff too. Its kinda like a rwally long documentary on a close nit family.

My mom watches it so I try not to judge too much but she also listens to music that makes me want to fill me ears with hot glue  Mostly rap/ edm...

She does listen to and watch some good stuff too at least so I am not fully ashamed  the drama on shows like that just seems so petty though...

Ancient aliens is cool but man... what happened to them making movies about aliens? There's been a few but all the blockbusters just stopped.

I don't know if the overall ratio of good TV shows to bad TV shows has changed, but I think the quality and entertainment value of the best TV shows from the past 5 years or so has vastly improved compared to a decade or two ago.

I think all the censoring was killing us, but now, as others have said, we've got things like Netflix where they don't have to worry about the fcc cracking down on them, and their budgets are just as big as mainstream movies and shows. It's like the filter has been lessened and now there's just a bunch of shit passing through it u know and eventually we get something good..

That is fucked up they are allowed such a monopoly. That much a year isn't that bad for TV though unless you have to pay for service on top of that...

Getting in trouble for having an antenna but no tv is data pimping to the max, its sickening companies get away with crap like that.

I would say The sopranos were the main show to usher in a new age of T.V. being equal to film in all regards.

However, yes, T.V. is now equal to film as a story telling medium
and shows from the early 90s just do not compare to what wehave now
across all genres.

We are absolutely living in the Golden Age of TV shows. Pay stations or "free" cable stations, for at least 5-6 years have been better than movies. Who would have ever thought Mathew McConaughey was going  to be seriously great. I rank him with the early to middle DeNiro, or any other actor who ever lived.
