patch when a few spots have mycelium poking through the size of a small button. Either putting more on those spots, or moving casing from the spots where there isn't mycelium work fine.

I would say it's a better option to add some new casing material instead of moving around the casing layer.

You should never mess with your casing layer once it is applied. You don't want to hurt the mycelium at all. Maybe you can't see patches of myc coming threw but that doesn't mean that there isn't any myc slightly colonizing the surface.

Remember that an optimal colonized casing layer doesn't show many spots of myc (only barely visible threw the uneven cavities of the layer).

So I recommend that you simply add some new casing over the big spots of mycellium and leave everything else alone.

good luck!

.fs.

I make extra casing material just for patching. I would not move the existing casing around since you don't know where the myc is at from where you are taking it from. Just take a spoon and dump a bit of new casing material on the place you want to patch. Do that until you have nice even myc just under the top of the casing, not on the top!

and another thing, when i case shoud I put it back into the incubator or put it into the fruiting chamber? Im having a problem getimg my casing to fruit and i think im doing something wrong, ive been incubating it till the myc grows out the casing and it contamed on me because when i misted it made all the visible myc get al waterlogged and die.

Take a look at this picture. Look really close and blow it up. You can see the myc just under the top layer of casing. I do believe I fruited this right away or the next day.

Also, don't mist too much. Only when the casing is dry.

You will get as many answers as growing methods exist. Personally, I don?t incubate casings cause, trying both ways, I found out that no matter what you do mycellium will colonize the surface anyway.
About watering, if we are talking about cased grains or cased PF cakes, IMO and IME it should be well watered for 3-4 days once the casing layer is applied using a fine mister. After that period of time is over, enough water should have been delivered to support a nice big flush, so you don?t need to water at all, just do it if it dries out. It?s Nanook?s method and works wonders (for me).
