    #23728286 - 10/11/16 01:35 PM (7 years, 4 months ago)

I'm confused should I wait for my mono to be completely covers in fuzzy thick mycelium or is OK if the substrate is colonized just not so thick and fluffy or should I wait tI'll the whole tub is fluffy ish? the whole surface is coverd just not as fluffy as the spots of spawn

Hard to tell from the pic but I'd probably wait a couple more days. If it's contaminated, it probably won't finish colonizing anyway.

hard to tell.

alot of people have been spawning and straight to fruiting and getting
decent results. personally i havent tried it.

i fruit when the top layer(no casing layer) is about 60-75%
it gets to 100% right when the first flush pins become more pronounced

Well I'm defiantly at about 60-70 % would it help if I opened the lidoor to snap a pic or would that hurt it(I try and be as steril as possible

Sure, but if you have a colonizing substrate where the growth slows or stops, it usually means it's contaminated, or the moisture content is off (which will also lead to contamination because there will be uncolonized material.) The contamination is often on the inside, and won't make an appearance on the surface for a while. I'm not saying that's what happened for you, but it's possible. Give it a day or two, and monitor it. Whether it grows more or not, I'd probably fruit it either way at that point.

You don't really have to worry about sterility with a colonizing tub. What you're more concerned about is introducing pinning triggers (fresh air) before it's ready to fruit. However, lifting the lid for a quick peek and photo is fine.

A tub will only fruit when it is fully colonized (or when the mycelium believes it is, in cases of weak growth the tub may look like it's not fully colonized when pinning begins)

My first point still stands, the tub will let you know when it's ready.

It looks okay to me, but it looks like it's not quite ready to fruit. Give it a few more days and see if it continues growing. Regardless of whether it does or not, eventually you will fruit it.

If the mycelium never really thickens up, then when you dump the tub, break the substrate apart and look at the interior. See if there are areas that didn't colonize inside. This will give you a clue as to what might have gone wrong, and it will give you experience seeing what substrate should not look like. Most likely problems would be 1) bad substrate moisture content, 2) substrate improperly pasteurized, and/or 3) spawn was contaminated.

for me... id fruit it now.

others might wait for it to be 100% but i fruit when it looks just like that.

again thats what i do... if a more experienced grower whats to throw science talk
to say otherwise for better results then ill stfu. :fine:

You should have mentioned that you're using a casing layer in the first post. I think you're fine. Personally I am skeptical of using such a large tub, because you're putting more eggs in one large basket for probably no good reason. That said, experimenting is fun, and I don't know what your goals are. Let us know your results.

Your mycelium in all the pics is a bit fluffy but probably nothing to worry about. Give it all a bit more time and update us.
