PNW: Psilocybe cyanescens with blackening on caps?

Found these today in the PNW on my lunch walk. About 2-3 look as I would expect Cyans to look but the rest have some very deep blackening on the caps that looks like some type of mold (or so i suspect). Is it safe to make tea with the black ones? If it's better to ground up any questionable ones and just bring them back to spread the spores i'll do that.

Think of them like food. Bacteria and mold and food poisoning are real things. You can boil the older ones for tea. It's really just personal preference. I've eaten some I'd never eat again and also be wary of road side mushrooms they can make you ill. Make sure your older ones get cracker dry as soon as possible. A dehydrator that goes up to 170 degrees is going to be a great investment. A lot of bugs and larvae leave when you dry them. Check Craigs list or swap and sell on Facebook I just scored a new PC for 15 bucks.

And don't worry about potency boiling when them here's some information on psilocybin and psilocin. They make a great tea and you can add honey and lemon or whatever you want and discard the mushrooms left (a lot of us eat them).
Be careful 2 grams can kick your ass.

Notice the temps listed 220C - 228C, That's 428F - 442F and it's the melting temp only.
If you take a solid and raise it's temp to its melting point, it becomes liquid. Return that same liquid to it's solid temp and... you get the same original solid (it is not destroyed) So... Psilocybin IS NOT DESTROYED at temps as high as 442F.
Notice the temp for Psilocin, and that it is only measured in Methanol.
That is because in water the oxygen molocules of the water would oxidize it and desrtoy it. (Not the heat)
So... when you dry your shrooms, the active ingredients of psilocybin and psilocin are exposed to oxygen destroying the Psilocin but not the Psilocybin, no matter what the temp is.
Keep in mind that this only refers to the chemical form... not live mycellium.

Do a spore print. Those don't look right to me, better safe than sorry.

I have read a bit about black spots on Cyans, they're common, many people cut the black spots out before drying.

That blackening isn't that bad. Was there a period of dry or wind, followed by rain in your area? When that occurs, the edges/surfaces of the caps will slightly desiccate and then when re-moistened by the rain will begin to rot. That pretty much describes the entire SF Bay area season last year.
EDIT: Here's some P. allenii from last year that didn't fare much better than your cyans.

Re-doing prints from yesterday as the first ones didn't come back so good but look black/dark purple'ish

I think I'll try a tea with couple of the healthier looking ones and lookup a good way to grind the older/blacker into a mulch to spread about. Thanks for all the tips and info!!!
