I caught an octopus!
    #23726884 - 10/10/16 10:16 PM (7 years, 3 months ago)

I was surf fishing at this beach that dead ends into a rocky point.  There is a small kelp bed directly out from the spot about 500 yrds.  I was fishing with sand crabs and i got a long cast off.  I hate catching octopus, because:
A) i don't like eating them
B) They are a pain in the ass to unhook and let loose.

However, the fact that he was around indicates that the rock pile might extend all the way from the point to the kelp bed, in which case, i might think about bringing some live baits back to that spot.

this one wasn't too big, maybe 36 inch arm span.  Octopus are much smarter than a fish, so once he figured out that he was hooked, he started swimming toward me.  he never even pulled the clicker, i only noticed him because i saw my line was getting slack and i thought it was a chunk of kelp on the line.  I started winding him in, and they don't have much swim strength, so he basically felt like a chunk of kelp.  I didn't know he was an octopus until he was 10 feet from me.  Then he grabbed onto a rock, and i had a hell of a time getting him loose so i could get my hook back.  Gotta be careful not to let them grab you or you'll end up with sucker marks and maybe a bite or two for your troubles
