Yea I was confused at first, that big rectangular stone or wutever is consciousness.. So like consciousness somehow made its way to the apes and they got smarter.. And Eventually became like human..
And the whole Ai on the spaceship is suppose to signify our dependence in technology.. And how it would eventually screw us over..

So great. I really love this movie.
An alien civilzation is placing monoliths necessary for the advancement of the human race.
As you find them you learn more, and the desire to find the next one deepens.
As the last monlith is approached on jupiter the protagonist is then subjected to the most eye opening experience, and its too much for them to comprehend, he evolves to the next stage of human evolution, the star child. What happens next is anyones guess.
Maybe you need to watch 2010:Odyssey 2 to understand. I haven't seen it yet, I just learned of its existence yesterday.

There is an interesting dichotomy in the scene 'The Dawn of Man' was the fact that the unintelligent animal using a tool the significance, or the fact that he used the tool to kill another of his kind? Pretty deep.

The obelisk represents significant evolutionary change

One thing I forgot, since I haven't seen this in years, is how fucking good the choreography is. It's stunning, with the music. These movie has defied time--I first saw it in a theatre in 1969

Ugh really? The monoliths are communication devices. The one on the moon sends a signal back to the aliens when it is uncovered, telling the aliens that the apes on earth have evolved to the point where they are capable of space travel.

I think there's a few ways it can be read, and that was Kubricks intention, to keep it open enough to invite fascination very important trick with any art form, tell them enough to suck them in but never tie up all the ends too tidily or your work is considered slight and cheap
ingenious movie though, it and the Shining I love equally

No, I read the book. The monoliths are monitoring/communication devices.

HAL represents the calculating human mind that is afraid of enlightenment. It needs to be deactivated to allow for the next step in evolution.

I took an Nbome once 2CI and it brought me really close to the visuals of the ending scene, not the headspace though.
I havent tried natural acid yet only Nbomes.

Same here. My older brothers took me when I a kid, but I only liked it until the bone went up in the air. Fell asleep shortly after and it's had the same effect on me ever since. To this day I've never been able to watch it all the way through. I think I was expecting a Raquel Welch One Million Years BC kind of thing, but with dialogue. I was a horny 8 year old!

One of the greatest movies ever. The movie and the book are separate art works. Just because something in the movie which was left ambiguous was explained explicitly in the book doesn't mean the movie is explicit. The ambiguities heighten the movie.
