Black Liberty Caps? Need help with Identification
    #23724760 - 10/10/16 10:39 AM (7 years, 3 months ago)

Hey all, beginner hunter here.

Could use some help in identifying shrooms. Yesterday, these were found right alongside regular liberty caps, was wondering if they are somehow the same thing. They were growing in the same biome and were strikingly similar in all the qualities excluding color (they were coal-black when fresh). Details:

1. Habitat - were found in thick, swampy underbrush. Unfortunately, there are no photos of the habitat. The area was not a swamp per se, nor was it flooded - it was near a rural settlement, on a roughly tended to (trimmed with a harvest cropper, maybe) piece of "lawn", with a lot of mixed weeds and swampy shrubs. There were birches growing nearby. There were at least 8 different mushroom species found growing in the immediate area. No cow or other animal dung was spotted, but it was likely there.

2. Location - Eastern Europe (UTC+03:00).

3. Gills - black to greyish black, uneven in mature shrooms. Mostly identical to that of a regular liberty cap, some of thich were found (and eaten, with considerable effect) nearby. Cannot really comment more on the gills - dont know the terms. Hopefully, the photos will help.

4. Stem - black to dark brown, thin, woody and tough, gets pulled out with the whole mushroom and the mycelium if not cut, weaves into a "thread" when spun with fingers (does not break easily when spun). No blue or purple colored hue on the base of the stem, only white mycelium fragments.

5. Spore print - black. see picture.

6. Scent of the mushroom - Mushroomy? As a beginner, I really don't smell anything specific.

7. Mushroom bruises - appear slightly darker than the base color of the stem/cap. no blue or purple hue was noticed. Bruising is less prominent when they were fresh, and became more apparent as they dried up a bit, but were still wet.

Addendum -

1. Color - Unfortunately, have no photos of fresh ones, but they were completely black, coal black. As they dried over night, the caps cracked up and lost some of the color, becoming that of a dark greyish brown.

2. Weather - These were gathered under a constant drizzling rain, so everything in the vicinity, including the shrooms, was completely saturated with moisture.

Thats about it. Any help would be greatly appreciated, and can provide additional photos/info on request. Cheers.

They are all mixed in a smashed and drying state so although I think some are libs it may be beyond an ID. If you have some good shots from the field those may be more use.
