*Note to moderators: please move this thread if posted in wrong section. Thanks.*
So I have read and read and researched and read some more. Right now in my area of Virginia there are mushrooms galore! I can't wait to get my hands on them and be able to learn more and even do some projects with my kiddos with them. I also would like to have some for me and my wife to enjoy safely. So that leads me to my questions.
Before I set out if I am planning to acquire as many as I can, what should I bring with me to extract them?
Should I keep different types separate from each other?
I have seen at least 20 different mushies in my area which consists of wet and dry lands, grasslands, rivers, birch/pine/red oak/maple tree forests, beech wood and a corn field.
Any advice before my adventure would be great.
Also when I get all the info to identify them should I just make one big post or apost for each type?
Thanks in advance!!

There's a swiss army knife in my pocket at all times. Be kind to the fungus and don't yank the mushroom out of the ground - cut them close to the ground so you don't damage the mycelium underground

Thank you for that. Any suggestions by the way of where to locate magics? The ground in my area is highly acidic.

When picking a mushroom for identification make sure you collect the entire mushroom, including the base. You may have to dig the base up, I usually just use my knife.
Also make sure you take clear photos of every part of the mushroom.
You don't have to keep different types separate, but it certainly prevents confusion if you do. I have a plastic tackle-box type deal with different compartments that I use, but a basket/bucket and some wax paper also works.
Take spore prints and fill out the information in the ID request the best you can. A single post is fine as long as it's organized and not too long, like 10 species or less.

Mushrooms will pretty much grow anywhere, particularly places that are damp and out of the sun. Are you looking for anything in particular?

Ovoids would be high on my list. For my wife and I it would be great to find some active gyms or psys. For the kids I am just gathering everything I find so we can all learn how to identify and spore print. The rains from Mathew and warm weather are popping up all sorts of things here. I have an array of micro-climates in just a few acres of yard so I honestly have no idea what to expect.

Stopped to sit down on a felled tree laying in the creek bed in my backyard and listening to the sound of the water running by. Its truly peaceful.
I never knew mushrooms could be so exciting, there a quite literally thousands and thousands in these woods. Things I never saw before are showing up and I'm getting a New appreciation for where I live.
Hopefully I will be able to meet someone down the road who can tell me everything I am seeing.
In the meantime I am taking photos, sadly they will be crude in comparison to some people's as all I have for the time is my cell phone. Would love to post them so you all can see my adventure. Is there a way to make an online photo album? Somewhere free preferably.

I am posting from a cell phone and terrible with forum board codes. If these display wrong or too large if someone would be kind enough to resize for me in their post I will edit mine.
These are about 5% of the ones I found. I cannot post pictures saved on my cell phone. I don't have internet where I live but if anyone would be interested or willing I can text photos of the cooler mushies I found and they can post. Private message me If you want to discuss that option with me.
On my hike I found red, orange, blue, Orange and black, brown, crazy flute things, flat shelf things, and awesome shaped ones I cannot even describe. These things are amazing!!
Waiting for spore prints I will cover them and check in about 3 hours. I just got back home. Fun fun!!

IDK much but i'll take a stab...the big slimy in your first pic might be a Pluteus species. the first one in your second pic is a Russula sp. top one in your third pic might be an Entoloma sp. first one in your fourth pic might be Armillaria. second and third from the top in your sixth pic are prob Russula.
take a look at the ID template when you go to make a post and fill that out as completely and accurately as possible for each specimen to get more/better input. you need to include information such as where it was found, what trees were around, some measurements, spore print color, gill type, scent, taste (chew a tiny bit and spit it out), and things like that. IOW, you need more input to get better output.
you can also sort them by placing ones that appear to you to be the same species in the same photo while photographing them in natural light and taking pics of the gills as well as the stipe and pileus to get better, more helpful pics. most modern phone cameras are fine if you take the time to use them well.
