Apparently you can't wear shorts when you do standup comedy
    #23722965 - 10/09/16 05:30 PM (7 years, 3 months ago)

I've been going to some open mics and just learning to do standup the oldfashioned way (by just doing it, as opposed to going to a school for it).

I've picked up a lot of things that I would've never thought of. I used to just take the mic off the stand and start talking. One of the guys told me I'm supposed to put the stand behind me if I take the mic off. That made sense.

The more recent one is that I'm not allowed to wear shorts. Apparently it's not "respecting" the stage. I'm baffled by this, because I've never liked or disliked a comic based on their outward appearance. I never thought, "Wow, that guy's got great material, but boy do I hate the way he's disrespecting the audience with his clothes."

Of course, I'd understand if this was a formal event. The traditional spokesperson does not wear shorts...

But this is comedy... which is sort of the opposite of that. Isn't it supposed to be a free for all and expressing your individuality? I'm not saying shorts is my identity, but if I happened to be wearing shorts that day, why does it matter?

Apparently though, the guys with more experience told me there are places that would not have let me get on stage with shorts, and it was also implied they let me slide even though they look down on it because they see it as a form of "disrespecting the craft." I disagree but this is just one of those commandments that are written in stone, evidently.

Anyway, just thought it was ironic.

PS: They also said no more wife beaters for me.

But why does it have to be a part of my bit?

I thought comedy was anti-establishment and all about deconstructing tradition and social mores, as opposed to conforming to unwritten rules for the sake of it.

Tell them to go fuck themselves and start doing open mics at different clubs. I've never heard of dress rules for comedy .

Turn this into a skit.
Getting kicked off the stage for wearing shorts can be great material.
Warp it.

A lot of times, people and/or institutions who claim to be "anti-establishment" and in favor of deconstructing tradition really have their own rigid set of rules and traditions that they want to promote and enforce.  It sounds like you went into comedy with your own projections about what it would be like.

With that said, just because some random people at an open mic told you some rule of thumb about the comedy industry does not necessarily imply that it is true.

U should wear short shorts underneath ur pants, and then when u go up on stage u can rip ur pants off to reveal ur short shorts and then start talking about how shorts aren't allowed in comedy

Thanks guys. I might turn it into a bit in the future that segues into breaking down other social habits and customs that we practice "just because"...

But right now, I'll probably just do what they say, because if there's one thing I've learned from doing open mics, and from listening to interviews of other comedians starting out, is you sort of have to politic and "play the game" in the beginning. Otherwise you end up offending someone, and that negative relationship affects other opportunities in the future.

Some comics, especially the ones with a lot of experience, seem to harbor entitlement. They're good at dishing out insults, and you think it's all in good fun, until you dish one out yourself, and their mood suddenly changes.

So I think I'll walk the line for now, instead of making some of the older guys feel insulted, even though it's clearly not my intention.

I've endeavored into writing and comedy to get away from "politics" and "institutionalized systems" but it seems inevitable. It's just a part of life. It exists everywhere, even in art. You have to know when to walk the line, and right now, as a no-namer just dabbling the scene, I'll only end up offending the gatekeepers of open mics.

Just wear those pants that unzip at the knee so you can be wearing pants but just before you go on you can unzip into shorts.

Fuck that, bro. Comedy goes beyond all that bullshit. U gotta remind peeps what real comedy is all about. It ain't about money or fame, it's about having fun, it's about turning something negative into something positive. It's light.

Seriously bro, this is ur chance to create something new, this is how legends are made. Go ur own route, make ur own shows..

Ask them (calmly) to explain how making light of some of the worst parts of humanity is okay, even encouraged, but somehow wearing shorts is disrespectful. Then go up on stage and repeat the whole conversation to the audience. It should be quite entertaining.

I think some of it has to do with the contrast of looking like you have some class and then having some good humor. That why you see a lot of comedians in slacks and stuff.

Break barriers. Focus on delivery to the audience. When rock n roll made it to the stage in the early days it was all proper and clean for appeal. But what is more appealing?.. Watching people push the envelope and destroying barriers, blowing peoples minds in ways they never thought possible.

Tell them you wear shorts with no underwear so the stage has a clear view of your balls as a sign of respect.  Then show them your balls, because it's respect.

dressing like Larry the cable guy probably wouldn't work if you are trying to be political
you are putting on a performance the way you LOOK, MOVE, and SPEAK all add to your character

Definitely.

Everything has to match, or it doesnt make sense. A good example is Natasha Leggero. She puts on a old timey 1920s outfit with a demenor and style of talking that reflects it as well.
