Making monotubs - need advice
    #23721756 - 10/09/16 10:55 AM (7 years, 3 months ago)

Hello. I plan on making 5 monotubs here soon. Each one will have a different cube variety in it. The store that I bought my spawn bags from says that I should mix 2 pounds of colonized grains with 5 pounds of substrate. Is that sufficient, or should I put more than 2 pounds of colonized grain? Also, should I use casing, and if so, how much should I approximately add per bin? I've grown in a monotub before, but it was a grow kit type of grow and I didn't know the spawn to substrate ratio. I didn't use casing, but I'm willing to if it will be of any benefit.

The Damion5050's bucket tek found in my signature may be the easiest way. Coir is very beginner-friendly.

If you choose to use the bucket tek (which I highly suggest you use) you will be using approximately 650 grams of coir as well as 2 quarts of vermiculite and 4 quarts of water.

I suggest you use 5 quarts of grain spawn to each 66qt tub you intend to use.

This is an average spawn/sub ratio that has given many of us great results.

Are your spawn bags pre-filled with sterilized grain spawn or did you just buy bags?

If you purchased bags without spawn already in them-depending on the bags volume-I would keep the bags filled with certain amounts of grain that would make it easy to deliver the 5 quarts of spawn to each tub- such as 5 quarts per bag or 10 quarts per bag. If your bags are super small - maybe 2.5 quarts to each bag, etc...

This will make math time easy when it comes to spawn all your tubs.

I'm not gonna lie - there are a ton of different ways you can go with this.

I suggest you make a decision on substrate type first so we can guide you a bit easier.

Fuck I hate them substrate ratios in pounds. For a hobby dominated by volume measurements those vendors are displaying just how little they understand. All they give a shit about is getting your money.

I agree. I hate it when someone says they have "X amount of spawn in lb's... How many lbs of substrate should I use?"

I DON'T FUCKIN' KNOW -- BRUH!

I got all my stuff pre-made from Shroom Supply. They recommend 2 pounds of their grain spawn to 5 pounds of their substrate. I think it should work okay. I just want to know if a casing layer would be beneficial. I have my bins already made, so I'll have to use them. I'm not exactly a beginner, I've had one successful monotub run, but I did screw up a couple of things, so I wanted to make sure that I ask questions and do everything right this time.

Is it your intention to introduce fruiting conditions during your spawn run-or will you allow a build-up of Co2 during colonization and introduce fruiting when the tub is fully colonized?

If you are going to introduce fruiting conditions at the beginning-I would case the substrate until you get the hang of dialing-in a tub quickly and efficiently.

If you do not intend to introduce fruiting conditions at the spawn run - I wouldn't case the substrate.

This is your preference in the end, however - I have seen little difference in the same cultures with and without casing.

It's all up to you mate!

No worries man I just hate premade crap. If you find it works for you then cool. But it doesn't work for many many people. The instructions are designed to screw you up. It's a slap in the face to anyone who takes this shit even slightly serious.

With casing you can either case when you spawn or at full colonziation. Personally i always fruit when i case whether it's at spawning or not. But casing is pretty easy. If you use peat to case be sure to lime buffer and properly pasteurize it. Good luck with your tubs, I hope they work out.

I was going to be the first post here but I didn't want to tell op that making monotubs with premade shit is as good of use of your money as fireworks

I thought I smelled you here before me Bodhi....

And OP - he's definitely correct.

Stop buying the premade stuff - put some love into making grain yourself, etc, and you will have a better outcome every time.

I can't run a pressure cooker, I live in an apartment. This is my only option. I have had success with it before, I just could have used some better directions. I didn't know that y'all would be so harsh on the pre-made stuff, but thanks for the information anyway. I'll rely more on myself going forward, when I'm not living in a studio apartment.

Sort of the do it right or not at all mentality you get from eating a lot of mushrooms. It develops the person into a more mindful oriented life and realizing sometimes it's not that important to make yourself drugs in every situation

You might have good luck with these spawn bags. Many before you have not - the vendors don't appreciate the art of mycology. They don't pay attention to important details. Like Pasty said above, they usually just want your money.

For instance - moisture content is a key player in your spawn health. Who know's how long these bags have been PC'd...who knows what type of moisture content they contain... These questions all play an integral part in your success and by having another entity besides yourself responsible for that - you are investing in a risk.

We don't just "hate the premade stuff" - we hate the fact that they don't care about the art and that they are greedy and uneducated.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Why can you not run a PC in a studio apartment? I'm running a PC right now as I type this and I can't see how it would be intrusive in an apt setting...
Just curious!
