Vermiculite is not the best casing layer but if its all you have then go for it.

Put the colonised rye in a tray, I use plastic.  The add vermiculite to a separate bowl and add a little water.  When you pick up a handful and squeeze tightly you want a few drips of water to drop out.  This is called field capacity.  That is when you add it as an1/4-1/2 inch casin layer.  You then put foil on the top with a couple of fork holes and leave it to colonise to about 30%. White mycellium growth can be seen.

This is when you transfer it to a shotgun fruiting chamber.

All the info on the ins and outs and how to are in my links below.

Have a read.

In rr videos just go to casing layer and just think vericulite and no other ingredients

If you are going to take this hobby up the I would go for coir and vermiculite. https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/11916595

Grains on bottom thin layer of verm on top.  The mushies pin on the verm.

I found some info searching the forum but I'm not sure yet..

So I have a fully rye-colonized jar that someone gave me.

He told me to spread it in a baking dish, add vermiculite on top, seal and let the mycelium spread over the vermiculite for 5 days, then transfer it to a growing box.

He told me to wet the vermiculite when doing this but I saw videos that people skip this stage, they just add it, seal with aluminium foil and let it sit before moving it to the light.

I'm all confused

What now ?

Never use aluminum foil or any aluminum products like a disposable baking pan. For some reason that i do not know. Mycelium eats through it and leaves these holes all over. Had that happen to me when someone told me to cover it with foil. I'd highly recommend to stay away from that. And yeah you could just use verm but it's not nutritious, i believe it's called inert? But it's not going to feed the mycelium like you want. It's used for drainage in a substrate or to make it more airy. That's why ppl use coir and vermiculite. (Gypsum always helps too) but it's not going to ruin anything unless you have mold spores or bacteria on your vermiculite. You can just bake it on a pan for a little tho  Good luck op

you don't case with coir, it is a substrate.  you can reserve a small amount of it to cover exposed rye seeds, like a 1/4 layer over the top.  a casing is a non nutritious layer over the top that helps retain moisture  ex. vermiculite and peat.  For cubes this is unnecessary unless you live in a very dry climate.

Great advice !

I will use a plastic container then. But I can still cover it with aluminum foil, right?

Edit: I see that I can get coir and it's not really complicated.
But how much coir/verm should I use just for casing ?

I would'nt even cover it with foil. I did that and it STILL ate holes lol

I live in the UK and we cant get peat.  Its either coir/verm mix, coir or verm

No offence but Ive seen that paraphrasing from Roger rabbit and the old guard.  Coir is standard now for everything imo

Did you ever try without coir?
The advice I got was to use only verm over rye and for the adviser it worked.

More opinions? I'm about to go shopping soon!

Plastic of some kind or maybe another container flipped on top of it. I'm sure youll think of something.

Easier yet... Top fruit the bottle. What's top fruiting? It's the art of being a lazy fuck and just leave the jar untouched, pop off the lid, add a dry  verm layer  as a casing and spray the fuck outta the casing with a hand sprayer until you see the verm can't absorb more water...
Breaking the substrate and putting it in a tray is going to cause the mycellium network to spend energy to recover and there's no need for that if you are not going to spawn that jar to a bulk sub.

Dont worry about the tin foil thing, they work, plastic is better.

It would take longer than your grow would last for the mycelium to eat through it.  If it did just put it in a plastic tray the same size, problem solved.

You don't need polyfill for that, what you're describing is a shotgun fruiting chamber which doesn't need any polyfill at all, just a bunch of holes and some perlite.

RR has a video on how to build one
http://en.lmgtfy.com/?q=%22let%27s+grow+mushrooms!+pf+tek+part%22
You need to drill holes in a grid pattern, each hole separated 2" from the next.

But I think it's a lot of hassle to build one SGFC for just one jar. Instead you can cut a 2 litre coke bottle in half and fit it snugly around the jar mouth, dispose of the cap or leave it on without screwing it. The pop top will act as a humidity dome and there you have a chamber that'll work great for one single jar.
