Filter Experiment 1

So I read and read and read about the different filter mechanisms for jars and never really felt I had a solid answer to my question...
What's the best filter for my jar?
Now, before you jump to an answer, consider the definition of "best". "Best" means that it will keep contaminants out of the jar and allow for gas exchange. It also means that it's cheap, easy to work with, and can be sourced locally without having to pull out a credit card. I'm aware that some people on this board are into big production, so a filter specifically made for this purpose makes sense. However, some small time guys like me are willing to go with different material if it meets the criteria above.
I mixed up a batch of agar with a little green food coloring (thanks to advice from Pasty), and poured into 5 glass jars. Each jar had a 3/8" hole drilled into the lid. I covered the hole with the following:
1 - nothing (no filter) 2 - poly fill 3 - 1 layer of tyvex 4 - 3 household coffee filters 5 - 2 layers of synthetic felt (EZ or Easy felt)
I covered the jars with tin foil to protect from condensation and PCed for 1 hour. I removed the tin foil, and I then put the jars out on a shelf in a normal household environment. I didn't do anything to protect the jars and occasionally breathed on them and handled them on purpose. I DIDN'T inoculate THE JARS WITH ANYTHING.

Two days later, the #1 jar with the open hole started showing contaminants. Three days later, the #4 jar with coffee filters is showing 1 contaminant.

Today, day 5, I took the open jar out of the experiment. It was getting really nasty.

The coffee filter jar still only has one contamination point that's visible.
The other 3 jars appear to be clean so far.

I'll let the experiment run a little longer to see how the felt, tyvex, and poly fill turn out. For me, this is proof positive that coffee filters prevent SOME contamination, but it's not good enough to use on it's own. We'll see what happens in the next few days.

Good idea .) Love it when people don't take information for granted and try it themselves.

Nice. I'm not surprised by the results, other than I'd have figured the coffee filter jar would be worse.

So it's been 10 days now and basically no change. I'm going to call this experiment closed.
The coffee filter jar appears to have 1 contamination.

The remaining three jars with felt, poly fil, and tyvex were contamination free.

If someone wanted to call this absolutely conclusive, then the experiment would need to be run again several times over of course. For my purposes, one time is enough. Coffee filters might provide SOME protection from contamination, but felt, tyvex or poly fil (my personal favorite) will do a much better job.
