Do you trust/listen to your instincts?
    #23720498 - 10/08/16 07:46 PM (7 years, 3 months ago)

Do you trust and/or listen to your instincts?  Do you let them guide you through life, and do you turn to them to find answers to decisions that you have to make?

Have there ever been times where acting on your instincts led to significant loss or gain?

I tend to not unless I have no better alternative. I mean if all I did was what I felt like doing I'd just listen to podcasts, smoke weed, and sleep all day

I would question the idea that instincts are limited to what you feel like doing.  Those are impulses.  Perhaps instincts can be thought out and well-reasoned?

If I second guess myself or otherwise go against my instincts, every single time I am in big trouble one way or another

instinct:

1. Natural inward impulse; unconscious, involuntary, or unreasoning prompting to any mode of action, whether bodily, or mental, without a distinct apprehension of the end or object to be accomplished.

Perhaps intuition would have been a better word.

I'd say I am more instinctual. Big decisions in my life always boiled down to listening to my gut and so far it has lead to a lot of interesting results, a mixture of out most satisfaction to huge disappointments. I get this churning feeling in my stomach area when something is rubbing me the wrong way, it's where I usually take a step back but I always look for that feeling in that area. My mindset is set to observe and try to look at the experience and result from a learning point of view. A part of developing the intuition is learning how to recognize mistakes and what will it eventually lead too.

I think a big downside would be the old fight of flight trigger, it has unfortunate lead to rash decisions and significant loss in my life and seems to have a larger foothold on my mind than for say other members within my circle, friends, family..etc

I ignore many of my feelings.

Instinctive responses are often overstimulated in modern societies where physical danger is no longer present like it was when our ancestors lived.

i use intuition to improve situations to make them more useful to me.

I can pick up a lot of complex general information intuitively and use it to visualize the future.

It's a vibe thing.  I often can't put into words how my intuition works.  Many can't

People who don't think this way would have a hard time understanding.  They might see it as mystical.  But it is anything but magical.

It's about using all my past experiences to figure out a new situation.  For example,  say there's a person giving orders to other people.  I can intuit or wrap my head around the situation quickly by the vibe that people are listening to that commander.  I think about what other situations have I experienced where someone was able to give orders like this exact situation?  Now let's say I need to give some orders suddenly to people.  I use the vibe to figure out that everyone is listening to this person because they are physically standing in a higher part of the room.  So I know that in order to easily assume command that I will need to go stand in that high place of authority.

But at the end of the day I rely more on thinking than intuition.  And I sort of despise people who use their intuition and their feelings to decide things instead of thinking.

Its bad literally for two years I drove without a liesence insurance inspection or reg. I'd follow my way home and most of the time coming up to deciding which way to go ill look around and if the person in front of me put there blinker on, id take it as my sign to go that way. Once, I let someone make that decision for me and like, go pulled over and am still in court almost a year later.

. Met some one at a bar, they said you don't know who I am or what I do or may do. Trust me, you really dont know who I am, and always trust your first instinct. Dont second guess yourself, cause that first thought that came into your head was the right one, and as soon as you start to second guess yourself, you already fucker up. After he said that I started to walk away without saying anything, and he laughed and said ha, smart kid. Because that first thought I had was to get away from him.

Instincts are really important. They're the part of ourselves which bypasses logic and has a natural, intuitive response for our well-being. It starts, of course, with survival, but seeing as we live in such a dynamic world and as human beings our instincts of survival can extend to emotions, spirituality, success, anything. In that sense, instincts are crucial,
but it's important to be able to tell the difference between an instinct and just normal thinking.

Going with the gut is good to do when there's a lot of unknowns in a situation, or when dealing with the vagueness of the future. However, in other situations where most of the factors involved have come to light and one can think clearly about it, it's probably better to be deeply thoughtful and maybe even clever.

A lot of Bjork's influence for her song ideas comes from the necessity of reviving instincts in a modern age where they are often buried beneath layers of calculating thought and plans in order to cope with society.
