Edible giant puffballs?
    #23719765 - 10/08/16 02:51 PM (7 years, 3 months ago)

Habitat:
Found these fellers near a train track, growing between rocks, and on the very dry edge of the forest, among sparse grass, and dry moss, sticks, and leaves.
Gills:
No.

Stem:
Also no.
Cap:
Ranging from an inch to 8-9 inches, misshapen spheres, with a scaly texture, Ranging from white with brown scales, to fluorescent yellow and green on the older ones, generally looking like dinosaur testicles.

Cutting the firm ones open reveals either a sticky chocolate truffle like light grey texture, or a completely white interior, with the middle being a little more spongy than the outer layer.
Cutting open the older ones results in a mess and some coughing.
Spore print color:
Very dark greyish black, with a 3 to 4 foot blast radius depending how hard you throw them.

Bruising:
Not yet?

Few questions, I believe all giant puffballs are edible, am I correct in that assumption?
Are the young ones with white flesh the only ones worth eating, or are the ones with a firm grey interior also edible? I assume the old ones would taste like choking on an ashtray...
The one with the weird cracks on it(pictured), are the cracks indicative of weather damage, or some sort of infection? Are they still edible?
Also, any cooking tips? Are they safe to eat raw?

Unfortunately no, those are toxic. You have Scleroderma citrinum, or similar. Note the thick rind, like an orange, whereas puffballs have a thin, fragile skin. It's puffball season (at least in NY), so keep looking.

*sigh*
I found such a huge area with these growing... I was looking forward to a feast. Oh well, still fun to throw at stuff.
Thanks for the info.
