Does mycelium consume the food coloring in agar?
    #23719728 - 10/08/16 02:39 PM (7 years, 3 months ago)

Can discoloration in food-dyed agar happen because of mycelium consuming it or is it always an indicator of presence of bacterial contamination?

This is what I'm talking about -this one is clearly bacterial but I'm asking if it can also happen because of mycelium?:

So, discoloration alone is not an indicator of bacteria? Can it even happen if there is only cubensis mycelium present on the agar?

Mycelium eats color and stays white.

:whathesaid:

A slight faded discoloration is normal around healthy growth as it consumes the colored agar. However discoloration within the growth could be a sign of bacteria.

I had some 4 month old plates that were the same blue as the day I made them.  So it doesn't seem to fade with time, only with consumption from mycelium or contaminants.

It would be cool to make a blue LC... too bad the color would get eaten up so that wouldn't actually work.
