First (Late) Harvest Concerns

This is my first harvest. I guess I harvested this cake too late Im worried about the blue/green(turquoise) color I see on the inside of the stem and the white fuzzy stuff around the bottom. Do these look safe to consume? THANK YOU!!

Cut those stems lower and dry them out to eat as well.

Twist and pull from the base. You don't really need to cut. Really the only time that most people do is because they are trying to harvest at the same time. So if some grow faster then others, they will cut the cap and allow other fruits to catch up.

I did that cause I read that the holes left in the absence of harvested mushrooms can open the cake up to contaminants. But wouldn't the dunk and roll negate that issue?
Is the base (little baby pin heads) and base fleshy part edible just as well?

Yes, the remaining pins are most likely aborts, and are said to be the most potent. The white stuff is referred to as "fuzzy feet" and are usually due to lack of fresh air exchange (FAE). The whole mushroom including the fuzzy feet is perfectly edible. Don't worry about pulling your shrooms. Once the cake is fully colonized, it is very contam resistant. You'll be fine with a dunk also. However, if you roll again, it's not bad practice to oven pasturize the Verm first. Most people don't roll after the first dunk&roll. Pick everything off the cake. If any part of the mushroom breaks off and gets stuck on the cake, make every attempt to get it off. Once the cake is picked clean, dunk again for 24 hours. Any remaining aborts or pieces of mushroom tissue left behind could rot and cause contamn. Now, with that being said, don't think too much into it. Just do your best to pick it clean, but don't go hacking away at your cake lol.

If you're looking for quantity and aren't willing to dive into agar and grains, you should look into BRF to bulk. I also recently did a bulk grow to just Verm. You can make some more cakes, wait for them to colonize, wait the 7-10 day consolidation period and then spawn that to either Verm or a CVG mixture (check out CVG prep, BRF to bulk, spawn to straight Verm). You would oven pasturize Verm, lay down a bottoms layer in a tray, cut your cakes into like 1/2 inch slices, lay them down over the layer of Verm, take some other cakes and crumble them over the sliced gaps in order to fill any gaps between the slices, and then lay another layer of Verm on top. Put the lid on, and then wait to colonize and then fruit it. I did it with grains (same concept) inside of one of those aluminum foil food trays with the clear lids. Put 4 1/4 holes in the clear lid with micropore tape to allow for GE (gas exchange). Once it was fully colonized, I put 4-1 inch holes on the sides of the clear lids to allow for FAE and introduced into fruiting. I'll throw a link in to show you the fruiting chamber that I did. Whether you do slices, or crumble your cake, and spawn to bulk with either verm, or CVG, you'll pull more weight. Obviously, the CVG is the more beneficial route because of the added nutrients.
Here's an example of what I did with grain to straight verm: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/23670885
You can basically crumble BRF cakes and spawn them to any bulk substrate following all bulk teks as long as it matches quart by quart. It is a debatable topic in some people eyes. Some would say just fruit the cakes because you're damaging the mycelium when you crumble or cut the cake, but that is also old info the way I understand. If that was the case, people that go from grains to bulk would be damaging their mycelium when they break up the colonized grain in order to spawn to bulk.
I really hope I am making sense with my ramblings. my ADHD gets the best of me sometimes and I jump around. I guess what it all boils down to is either fruiting straight cakes, or crumble cakes and spawn to bulk...ultimately the choice is yours.
With that being said, I wouldn't wait too long before you start fucking with agar and grains. The possibilities are endless at that point. Clean mycelium, master petri dishes, slants, agar transfers, strain isolation, Liquid culture, Liquid inoculant, cloning live tissue, etc. With grains you can do G2G (grain to grain) transfers, slurries, grain to agar, etc.
multispore to agar, followed by a couple tranfers to clean up the mycelium ensuring no bacteria, dropped into a grain jar, allow to fully colonize. Then G2G transfer. 1 jar can transfer to 10, each one of those jars could transfer to 10 more, each of those could transfer to 10 more, stop there (too many transfers can degrade the genetics). Fruit them out, take live tissue from one of the mushrooms you grew, put to agar, repeat the process.
I did it this way right off the bat. I bought 1-10cc multispore syringe, I used MAYBE 2cc's, its still chilling in my fridge, and have grown about 3 pounds of mushrooms...seriously, the possibilities are endless. just research and pick people's brains, take people's advice, and NEVER turn down advice from a Trusted Cultivator lol
