I think you missed the boat on that one. I almost bought a 1000$ worth of them when I had spare money and it was a buck a coin. Than they jumped to 400$ a coin. I kick myself in the ass over that one occasionally.

If you had done it you would have become rich , met a gold digging woman who made a pinhole in a condom and got herself knocked up. The marriage was brief and joyless, the divorce acrimonious and the children were spoiled morons.
The alimony and child support and legal fees were financially and emotionally ruinous.
You turned to boozing and and soon found yourself frequenting Thai brothels.
You took a young male lover who ended up castrating you in a fit of meth fueled jealous rage.
Pictures of you bleeding out on a soiled mattress were widely circulated and your family was ruined forever by Shame.
When you think about it you were lucky you didn't buy those bitcoins.

Yeah I don't think GPU mining has been profitable for a while, people moved on to ASICs. I mined with a 5830 for a while when BTC was something like $20 and made back the cost of the card in about a month, then said fuck it when they dropped to $5. Should have just hung on to everything I mined, oh well.

Bitcoin mining hasn't really been profitable for the last three years. Most of the money (investors money) is in ASIC development for emerging cryptocurrencies.

It must at least be profitable for people with very efficient hardware and low power rates, no? Why else would the big scale miners keep doing it?

I bought an ASIC for mining Litecoins, they are similar to bitcoin.
With just my video card I was hashing at a rate of about 4000-5000 hashes per second. With the ASIC I moved up to 30,000,000 hashes per second. This was done on a special rig that sucked in about 1100 watts!!!
Even then, I was only barely profitable. I was part of a pool, and I made about 1 LTC per day.

Bitcoin mining really isn't worth it to get into on a small scale. There are too many big guys with thousands of dollars of equipment hashing away.
Litecoins were all the rage, about two years ago. They had made Litecoins to be really hard to mine, so at first nobody was really mining very fast and you could make a surprising amount of LTC with just your PC. It wasn't long until they had ASICs coming out to do the work. You could mine all the LTC and then trade it online to Bitcoin. Managed to get a few BTC before it was all done and I wasn't profitable!
I don't know what it is, but you'll find that there is some coin that is all the rage to mine. Best is to pick one of the newer ones with BTC interchangeability, or at least have some way of getting BTC from what you mine!
