Spawn Bag Condensation
    #23715443 - 10/07/16 07:39 AM (7 years, 4 months ago)

First timer with spawn bags -
This is using the small ones, as I have heard there can be issues with stones not working out in large bags.

This might be a dumb question, but is it normal to get a bit of condensation on the inside of the bag?

Cheers

That bag looks fresh out of the pc. If I'm right the condensation will disappear when the grain reaches room temp.

Looking at uninnoced bags right now I don't see condensation

I don't remember reading anything saying stones don't do well in large bags, I'm sure that's how all the largest growers do it so idk where you got that misinfo

The stones like drier grain than cubes, also bags water content has to be less than jars. With as much mass there is in bags if the same moisture content was used as with jars, bacteria would grow.

:whathesaid:

thats normal post PC.

if u noc ur bags and a few days later small to large pockets of condensation start appearing where there is no mycelial growth, then u should worry.

Hey Filthyknees -

My hesitation for using bags came from a post by Troll Eater -
I trust this guy, as he has been quite helpful in the past:

the larger you go the more you risk if thats what your asking, the reason we stop at qt jars and don't use galons of half gallons is they tend to go anaerobic in the center befor they colonize

Anyway that being said - I have started using small grow bags, just in case they went anaerobic! I still do not know the limiting factors.  I ensure they are PC for a good hour and a half and so far so good...

Here is a picture of the bag after two days, as well as a close up of the extent of hydration -
Hopefully this is okay.  I like to overboil them a bit so that the grains have plenty of water.
After PC and cooling the grains seem to soak back up every last bit of water...

If what ur doing is working them Keep at it but when you prep grains to full moisture capacity and load them into bags with excess moisture on outside of grain, that water can't get into the grain because its already completely saturated with water from ur prep.  Generally this collects at the bottom of the bag and causes problems as yr bag reaches 100%.  So generally, be it a bag Or a jar, loading wet (not enough dry time) AND saturated grains (simmer too long) isn't the best idea for those who may be reading this and having problems with their spawn
