Today I found the last late flush of the season, I'm fairly sure this is it for the year!

Well, first off, I wouldn't consider myself any kind of expert on these, so anyone can feel free to take this ID with a grain of salt. I haven't been able to find any satisfying pics of G. luteofolius from the East Coast or the Midwest, except for what's listed on mushroomexpert.com (collection from Illinois). The differences that lead me to believe G. braendlei over G. luteofolius would be most pronounced in the stipe characteristics. The impression that I get is that the stipes of G. luteofolius tend to have a stronger vinaceous coloring, and look more fibrous than these. The stipes of these can be fibrous and have vinaceous hues, but can also appear more smooth, and more pale colored. You can see in the picture with the younger purple one that the stipe only appears fibrous where I have touched it. This find is not the best example, but these can be very orange in maturity, but these are also extremely variable with age and conditions. The gill connection here is shortly decurrent, not notched, or adnate. I also think that the spore print of G. luteofolius is more rusty orange-brownish, while the prints of these are bright rusty orange. So that's what I think, but if anyone wants to call these G. luteofolius, I'd be happy to hear what they have to say about it.

Why do you think this is the last flush of the year?
I have just started seeing many species of Gymnopilus fruiting in abundance, only saw sapineus and penetrans during the warm months, but lots of luteus and junonius recently.
From what I have read, in the NE, USA, they should continue fruiting until things begin to get frosty.
Is there some reason braendlei will not fruit in cooler temps?

I'm not sure where you are, but things have begun to get frosty here, temps are dropping fast. I have G. luteus in the same location and yesterday I only found one small fruit. On this particular find, a couple weeks ago it flushed huge, and now these fruits are the second flush which is much diminished. By all means keep hunting if you're still finding! But for me, I've never found a gym past this date. Next week I'll be swimming in Galerinas and a few other interesting species for sure, three weeks from now and the only thing I'll be finding will be F. velutipes and a few sad looking Galerinas, maybe some lemon discos. I was surprised to even find any gyms yesterday, it's been cold.

I saw Galerina for the first time this year the other day, but lows here are in the high 40's/low 50's at night, and 60's/70's in the day, so I should be able to observer and photograph more specimens before things take a turn for the worse.
I love to photograph Gymnopilus, same reason I love to photograph Amanita, they're such majestic looking fungi.
You should be looking for Clitocybe nuda as well now, they love cold temps, and are delicious.
