Heavy metals
    #23717172 - 10/07/16 06:01 PM (7 years, 3 months ago)

I've found a great source of wood chips. It is from local trees chopped up into chips and left in a spot by a wood company.

I was wondering how worried I should be about heavy metals in the wood.

I also got a free 60 lb bag of hardwood shavings. (Guy I got it from works on hardwood floors. He says it was from a new flooring. The wood was just sun bathed and not chemically treated) I'm more worried about this wood then the chips.

The floors would have stain and varnish on em. Scratch floors. You want sawdust from a lumber mill or the tree company. Issue with the tree company is they are probably just chipping and that will be too coarse and poke holes in your bags. You want more of a coarse sawdust from a big saw.

Do you hAve any reason to be worried?  Does your soil naturally have heavy metals or is the wood from aN industrial site ?

Here is something I found 2 years ago and have always remembered.
Heavy metals can be overcome by increasing carbon sources.

At this point they become beneficial.

Fungus tends to move heavy metals and other unwanted toxic products into the mushroom cap itself. You can read about people being posined by mushrooms that have had these metals in them and so on.

Thats true I did not consider lead, aluminium and other toxic metals.
I guess stick to natural or fit for growing products.

trees also do the same thing. They absorb the metals into the wood. The fungi then takes them out of the wood etc.
