Spore print sterile procedure

Is it necessary to be 110% sterile when taking a spore print? Assuming I am going to make a syringe and then only ever use it to start culture on agar, it seems like it wouldn't matter as I will be cleaning it up anyways. Thoughts?

Surprise, spore prints are NEVER sterile. Watch this.
You can only be so messy before not even paul stamens could not isolate even on agar. Thats why you gotta be as clean as possible (within practically and reason.)

There is absolutely no reason to make a syringe for what you're trying to do. Making a syringe is just one more thing to contaminate. Just use a loop or any flamed utensil to transfer some spores from your print to agar.

Side note: If you use old spore prints I recommend to use an agar recipe with a low agar content about 1% - 1,5%. The spores hydrate faster and chances are higher for germination. It helped me a lot with my old prints (5+ years).

back when i was afraid of agar i was SUPER OCD about taking what i thought was a 'clean print'. found out its almost impossible to make 100% clean print.
after i grew up and got my agar on i found i do not need to be super crazy clean when taking a print cause its always put to agar and grown out and cleaned up anyway.

But it helps if you keep things sterile. If you pick a fruit where the veil just tore within the hour or hasn't even ripped yet where you peel it off yourself, then you stick it in a prepped SAB and cover in glass while the print falls, I'd say your print is going to be 99% + clean of contams, and that 1% can suck a dick if you are using agar.

I gotta disagree with this. I've had no luck with printing caps with the veil just torn. I've always had to wait for the vail to tear and the cap to open up quite a bit.

Yeah you can't do it whenever you want, it has to be the right mushroom with a super stretchy veil that didn't tear when it normally would.
This mushroom would print.

I never bother tearing the veil, it's ready to print when you see spores on the caps
