Help identifying Amanita-esque Mushrooms
    #23714293 - 10/06/16 08:14 PM (7 years, 3 months ago)

Habitat:
They grow in a mixed deciduous forest in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western Virginia (Lexington/Buena Vista area). They a are located on the ground, growing out of dead leaves (the big one growing very close to the base of an oak[I am assuming they have a mycorrhizal relationship with the trees]). They have only recently appeared now that the temperature has lowered to a consistent 60-65 degree F in the evenings/mornings (it is not reaching over 70 during the days). It has not been raining often at all - in fact it has been rather dry for the last month.

Gills:

Smaller Mushrooms(SM): The gills are white and are not "True Gills" - every second or third gill does not reach from the cap to the stem (this is just clarification for me since I am still familiarizing myself with terminology). The gills are very strait; however, they 'wave' slightly as they reach the cap.

Larger Mushrooms(LM): Same as the smaller ones, except the gills are thicker.

Stem:

SM: Stems average length of 6 1/2 inches. They are white with reddish tint most prominent in the middle (closer to the cap is pure white/closer to the base is pure white).Stem is hollow. Stem is super thin. The veil/ring is very small and very thin.

LM: The length (as I only found one) is about 9 inches. It has the Diameter of about 1 1/2 inch. The texture I do not have the vocabulary for: It is  layered, flakey, it is sort of ribbed(?). I did not feel whether is was hollow or solid as it was the only mushroom and I didn't feel comfortable disturbing it - otherwise I would describe it from sight as being very thick. Now this is one of the coolest skirts I have seen. It is long and thin - it looks like a long white dress and extends slightly outwards (conical) and reach from the cap to halfway down the stem.

Cap:

SM: Diameter is 4 inches average. The rim is a few cm thick and rough. The cap itself has a few warts like an amanita; however, mainly it has the same tecture/features like the stem of the larger mushroom has: flakey/scaly bits. It has a little brown nipple at the top. The cap is predominately white other than the warts (brown) and the flakey bits being and off-white/brownish-white.

LM: The same as the smaller mushrooms , except it completely lacks any brownish hue and there are no warts. Also the nipple isn't brown.

Spore print color:

SM: white

LM: Again, I didn't want to disturb it.

Bruising:

SM: Brown Bruising.

Other information:

I have seen the larger mushroom before on the internet - I just failed to find it after a time spent searching for it.

Your top specimen is an Amanita but the second specimen is likely Macrolepiota
