I had my first chanterelles the other day. My dad cooked them and they were actually incredible. So nice find. I never find them because they don't grow in the cities....do they? Isn't it kind of something people go to the forest for?

They come in all shapes and sizes! Sometimes the material they are growing through shape them, other times frost or drought cause odd growth through the top. They're quite adaptable to what's going on around them, awesome mushroom!

Your salamander is a rough skinned newt Taricha granulosa
They are very poisonous when consumed and are responsible for deaths here around the PNW.

this book I have on the medicinal properties of Shiitake will give you faith again. Its all based on science.it kinda blew my mind..also, I feel you about naturalpaths... it can be helpful(and straight up healing), but not if they deterr one to get proper treatment by promising unpromise-able results.

Largely based on scientific studies, but it does cover traditional folk medicines from asia which can help understand shiitake's medicinal properties.

I find and make Lions Mane vitamins because it helps with neurological disorders, symptoms and repairing neural pathways. I have MS and its been a great help to me. It's definitely not just anecdotal. Even my scans show promise, all of my tests...Just saying, it never hurts to use our awesome fungal friends to help us stay healthy.

Is it worth checking out some of these Russula and Boletus? I see them on the coast here all the time and in great shape. I saw one giant Russula and when I came back I saw it was harvested with a knife. The deer and elk eat them too. I'd only be eating the freshest of specimens so things to look out for will be obvious.

Been finding some midsize B. edulis walking the dogs down the street. ;-)

My hunting partner and I found a Bolete with a cap diameter of 1.5 feet that had been chewed in half by elk. Right on the last spruce tree sticking out into the mouth of the Columbia.

Do you guys hunt and eat slippery jacks? Or Kings? There's also some Russula I see being harvested carefully. There's a spot I found with very healthy kings/jacks, just wondering if it's worth buying the mushroom license for.

I eat kings, never Suillus. I've never eaten Russula either but I probably find more of them then any-other mushroom in the forest. Boletus edulis are definitely in my top ten, specially if you find the young buttons.

Edit: I ate Russula in spaghetti once, can't remember the species. It had an interestingly spicy flavor but not recommended.

Nice I'll give it a shot. It doesn't seem like a lot of bugs come to this place. The birds must get them all. Fungi get to grow fairly unmolested. I deep fried some mottled gills from a much more Sandy and grassy area. They were OK, but you can tell they taste what they grow on.

That's pretty fucking lame in my opinion, I wish they would start it up again so that some of these great photos can get recognition.

Technically anyone can make the thread, I assume it stopped because of lack of nominations/votes though.

I'd probably eat it.
There were maybe 10 coming up in this condition. This is a place I deliver to every day at work. One of the women who works in receiving is super into edible mushrooms. Maybe I should tell her...or perhaps not. I've still never eaten a king.

Nice ones.
I'm itching to get back up that way. I was scoping new spots around there during the summer, we should check them out soon.

You guys are making me hungry! Nice finds up north.
I've managed to find a few good Coprinus comatus, and more Marasmius oreades than I can pick. But we don't really start getting our good edibles down here for another month. Keep those photos coming!

So I went back and nabbed those suspected kings. I will post better and close up pictures of them for a 100% ID as I've never collected any boletes before. I had a friend who has a mycology degree tell me that if they were found in an area that uses pesticides that dunking them in white or apple cider vinegar and then rinsing with water should do the trick as far as removing nasty stuff. I only assume they spray because there are hardly any weeds growing in the grass in this particular area. I trust him so I decided to go back. Any of you heard about or used this method before?

Gonna go with the 5% vinegar wash to be safe. First kings I've brought home. Pretty stoked to finally try them.

Yeah it has been so unseasonably warm. I was thinking of checking my chanterelle spots. Probably need to get out there tomorrow.

They like tan oak, madrone, manzanita, doug fir, true fir and pine. Problem is they are almost always hidden under the duff.
Christian Schwarz and Noah Siegel just put out a new book for the Redwood Coast, I'll bring it up for you to check out.

Going on my first hiking-in camping today at a Chanterelle spot I found earlier in the season! Seriously looking forward to saying hi to nature after all these plotical shit shows we have been succumbed to... the forest always has a welcoming peaceful voice.

Just dropping a note here in case "Ted" comes by.. I was the guy picking kings before the river and tossed you some azures.. let you borrow my knife for cleaning those two small kings.. dunno if you'll ever find this place but in case you do send me a message. Edibles are back out in that place I suggest going.

Phew... I have a hard time staying on top of the posts I want to make...
Thanks Adden! I've had some serious back pain but recently it has gone away, so my lady and I went out backpacking into the woods for the first time. Something ive always wanted to do...
Ive had this old Belgian rucksack from world war 1 for years. Its strap broke off eventually rendering its top flap un strap-able, but with some twine I found it to be extremely useful again. We were not prepared properly for a hiking-in camp out but did it anyways
felt cool to use an old WW1 rucksack to its fullest potential.

On our way into the woods from the road.

Anyways, on to the mushrooms. Found half of our harvest hiking in looking for a spot!
saw this one from far away... BAM!

They're caps were more orange in real life. And WAY more orange/gold than earlier this season when we found the spot.

so fresh

I love spotting these!
 A little closer
And its cap uncovered from the forest debris

Our haul at the end of it all. A lot of the Chanterelles we found were soaked with water, or too mushy to eat. But we still came back with this.

It was such a beautiful experience. Found a nice spot near a clearing in the woods leaving us with a wonderful view of the full moon rising and the fog rolling in and out of the forest in the distance under the moonlight. A family of deer wandered right by our camp in the early morning. It was semi-secluded. Not too far from the road, but far enough. Only rained for a few hours at most when we were in our tent. There was the sound of shooting in the distance, I would love to find a spot to get away from all of that, but overall it was an amazing experience!
I encourage everyone to get out there during the off season. What an awesome experience! Im itching to go back out, regardless of temps or weather!
