Rye substrate jars filter comparison: tyvek vs polyfil
    #23712948 - 10/06/16 11:52 AM (7 years, 3 months ago)

Well I posted about a week ago about tyvek vs polyfil lid filters and which was better. Some one said probably joking "why don't you try both". So I am lol. Basically to see if there are any differences in colonization time or drying of the grain etc. I'll keep posting until all the jars are 100% colonized
Btw this may have been done before but I couldn't find it anywhere so wtf.

So the first three jars have tyvek filters in them (from a painters suit not an envelope) with four holes the size of small wood nail however big that is.

The later three jars have a 1/4" hole right in the center with polyfil in them pretty tight.

All of the jars have rye berries prepared using RRs prep tek to a T and all were nuked for 90 min.

Thanks for looking! If you have any criticism or input let me know

You really don't need four holes in each lid with grain.  You don't want to use a bunch of spore solution if you are gambling spores straight to grain.  Use very little, like .5 cc per jar or even less for sure.

The holes were for air exchange not for inoculation..

i tried using only tyvek and no lid(used the screw part and a layer of tyvek)
and the wbs dried out really quick.

i know its not what you did just a heads up if you were thinking about it.

I wasn't joking.  I'm glad you tried both but you're not going to be able to "prove" anything about colonization times, unless you inoculated all those jars with the same clone. Or drying of the grain, really, since the tyvek lids have four holes and the poly lids only have one.

We all know they both work just fine, what I meant was for you to find YOUR preference, mainly as to  prepping the lids. I for one am fucking. sick. of stuffing poly. I intend to give unmodified plastic lids a try soon.

Keep up the good work

PS that's the same picture twice.

Well I guess this is more of testimonial report type log of my experience to see which I prefer. Also if anyone like me has the same question in the future they can look at this.
I guess you're right as far as it's not an exact comparison in relation to the hole sizes or whatever. But really it is a good comparison the techniques rather than the materials. The tyvek jars are done exactly how you would do tyvek jars and the poly jars are done exactly how someone who used polyfil would do them.

Btw thanks, I didn't even realize I posted the same pic twice. It's fixed now

Tyvek has given me lots of problems in the past. Contams and only usable a few times. Polyfil doesn't do much but I have successfully used it as a filter for LC. Which kind of blew my mind. I would suggest sfd above all else 1000 times over. I'm currently having a go at unmodified lids. Just don't pick your shit up all the time and you'll be good.

Not sure about your use of filter (I've always used cheap arts and crafts felt) but I used to use one big hole in the middle (about a 6mm drill bit)  and found the substrate dried out although just about got there. Swapped to two much smaller holes (1.5mm ish) and they flourished.

OP, next time you run a side by side camparison testing filters you should probably make everything the same except the filter.

Your likely to see differences in colonization rates and how quick one dries out compared to another when you have different sized holes

Tyvek:

Tyvek really took off after the shake. Shook it again today.

Polyfil:

Just shook the one with the most colonized area.
