Help ID, young Chaga?
    #23710676 - 10/05/16 05:47 PM (7 years, 4 months ago)

Sorry but all I have are the pictures as I did not harvest any due to the fact it was so small and I already have enough for a couple life times anyway.
I also forgot to smell it as I was too perplexed by the way the 2 trees (Birch and Spruce) seemed fused together. I have spent a lot of time in the woods and don't ever recall coming across this before.
I even tried to dig out around the V at the base of the 2 trees where they meet with another stick but they really did seem fused together?

Found on White Birch and is really hard.

I have only found older Chaga before and the sclerotium was all charcoal black, this one is a brownish color.

looks like the very beginnings of the exposed part of chaga but there should be some orange showing through the cracks. Maybe just chip off a tiny bit to see if there is orange underneath.
