To fully understand this post, we have to make a few assumptions to start: 1) that every human, and most likely every other organism, aware/self-aware or not, has a soul, 2) this soul is comprised of a universal "energy"; some form of charge that allows the animation of organisms, 3) this soul is completely separate from any religious viewpoints/ideals and does not conform to any pathway of a stereotypical "afterlife", 4) this charge or energy that is the soul IS released back into the Universe; it's irrelevant whether or not re-purposing of this energy occurs or not [by the universe]
Building upon the concepts of death anxiety and humans' unwillingness to accept and/or let go of, well, anything really, humans have deluded themselves into this mindset that the individual's soul is THEIR SOUL ad-infinitum. We are possessive and obsessive of something that most likely only "belongs" to one for the duration of one. Humans are so enveloped in this experience with its subsets of experiences they forget they are not separate from anything else. Even those of us here who tout the "knowledge of universal oneness" often separate the present experience from past or future experiences. There are no end-points. There are no stops. It's one constantly flowing river of [ ].
Many people claim past lives. They say, "these are my memories, this was me, MY past", attached to this miniscule piece of energy. They possess it. They embrace it; all the while denying the fact that their resources will be consumed by BILLIONS of organisms and distributed throughout the food web, which could result in some of those resources being carried around the globe, ultimately to be recycled numerous times within the confines of this world; when the planet is ultimately consumed by the sun, the energy/resources will be reformed and diluted further.
This idea is incredibly rough. i've spent half an hour reading, re-reading, editing, adding, removing, and i'm still not pleased with it. However, this is where it is for now, and is leaps and bounds beyond where it was this morning in a sleep-deprived stimulated state.

I get more from the title than the body of the "work in progress" idea.
anyway I don't think that possession is other than learned behavior, and the sense that another entity is in you is an artifact of the mind in a kind of dream state (or stoned state); so trying to make up an explanation for primitive rationalizations of the mystery of consciousness driven by the idea of possession and souls is not a great starting direction.
better to address that mystery with fresh clear eyes: starting with observing what mental contents are, and how mental contents shift.
