Let's get real. How many of you actually bring woodchips with you to add onto existing patches?....
No need to bring wood chips when there's already wood chips near the patch ....If I tore up a small section of the myc when harvesting, I'll cover that section back up with a handful of chips grabbed from the same spot/area that the patch is growing. (or is it ideal to actually bring fresh/clean/pressure cooked chips?)
I guess I'm a dumbass for not realizing that's what you meant. To be honest, in my personal experience, I have never come across a patch so heavily chipped that I could feasibly transplant nearby chips. Every find I have found has been really thinly chipped and moving chip would expose dirt.
I should also add that I have only ever found small patches (relative to some of the behemoths that some of you are finding) so that's probably why.
And for the record: When harvesting, I always pinch at the base of the stem and shear the stipe with my thumbnail. I have tried scissors but I find them to be clunky and slow me down.

Deeper substrate, more stem growth. Needs airflow. Try burying at he base of ivy ground plants, then piling chips on top of the ivy branches. I've seen some monsters.

Gravity - very nice! We found actives at 3 out of the 5 stops we made south of the city yesterday, but nothing quite as generous your fat allenii. Still it was pretty great can't-miss feeling like they were almost everywhere. Most of our allenii finds were young-ish growing amongst ice plants and weeds - forgotten and untended landscaping, the cyans were more mature, drier, growing in grass.
Saturday more than made up for the hours I spent walking around SF on Friday with no luck at all. I found several places I've been scouting literally covered with leratiomyces and other indicators, but nothing active and I've no idea if they've been picked over, just don't grow there or what. I've been checking three spots where I had success in SF last season but found nothing so far.
I think my new year's resolution is going to be to plant spawn I can walk to.

i caught the flu and we had a deep freeze last night. i feel like death so i haven't been able to check some spots. i'm sure the cold killed it for me, i feel like i barely got out.
it's a bummer but there's always next year and all the spawn i planted and will be planting.

I just want to say that I generally use my fingers and pinch as well, but I'm kind of surprised that nobody likes using scissors. Trimming scissors with a spring (like fiskars) are pretty damn efficient when it comes to harvesting, in my experience.

Yeah i love those small Fiskars micro blade clippers. They are 12$ but im glad i got them. They are narrow and dont get in the way, you can get in to clip individual mushrooms in big clusters and clip down close to the base. The finger pinch methods ok too but i end up with too many split stipes. Those fiskars clippers are really quick and efficient for harvesting larger patches especially

Very nice find! Man, I've only ever found patches that yield handfuls at a time. You guys sure find some awesome patches. I managed to snag up a handful of cyans today. I saw probably ~100 to 200 mushrooms growing in the bushes, but they were either black, shriveled, or tiny. Not quite pins, but not so large that their gills opened up. I leave those guys in the earth, but snag their bigger brothers.

Other than the hallucinogenic factor, there truly is something magical about them. I was admiring one I picked the other day, and the color gradient is so unique and interesting. Deep oranges, yellows, turquoise. Slightly lustrous. They are quite handsome.

They're my favorite Psilocybe. I just love the blue that they show. Blend up a few into a slurry and you'll see a deep turquoise blue. It's incredible. I wonder if humans can use it as hair dye. Other species are definitely used: http://mushroom-collecting.com/mushroomdyeing.html

i wasn't going hunting, i just went to the super market to buy a donut this morning
i was just about to walk into the supermarket, when i spotted this

growing straight outta bark chips, and right next to the entrance...
i tried not to be too rapey, but i couldn't help myself from grabbing some colonized bark chips.
i figure if it colonizes well even on bark chips in a super shitty habitat, then it might go crazy on good hardwood chips in a nice place, so i got some alder/maple/aspen mix soaking now

I collected a few P. allenii from a well irrigated area in the North Bay this morning. Some frost damage from the last few days, but not too bad.
