I am curious what that means? I am on the East coast, is that West coast lingo for some shroomy hunting behavior?
You gotta walk a lot to make finds there is what that means?

Lol, sorry about that. It was just a reference to an earlier post...the mushrooms at this location tend to get trodden upon!

No worries, just curious, you know in case I am ever on the West coast and someone says "were in the land of treading feet" I will know what they mean.

Nice find! Been scouring the Albany area today and haven't found much of anything but a tiny patch of mycelium

You need to check more spots more often. Perhaps look for places that are likely to have a lot of wood chips with Google Earth, or just go to industrial areas where you know every third building is wood chipped. Ignore spots with just a few wood chips and look for places that have hundreds of thousands of square feet of wood chips.

P. cyanescens today at the spot found fruiting last Sunday. I went back on Monday to water and cover 'em with leaves and had a helluva time. First of all, when I arrived, I saw to my horror that landscapers were there and doing something god-awful...one guy was shredding the base of all the plants with a mini-chainsaw and another guy was comin' in after him and sweeping all the cuttings out. Both were treading all over the woodchips that would be all the cyans once they got to that section. And second of all, they were taking periodic breaks to switch to another job: leaf-blowing all the leaves and disposing of 'em.
What I did as a result verges on extreme and caused me a great deal of unexpected physical and mental hardship. First, I took my mushroom trimming scissors and literally trimmed all the plants in the said section, that is, as best as I could to look like how the landscapers were trimming them, walking over some distance to dump handfulls of the trim. And then, I had to make at least four trips to a nearby place to retreive leaves, which were damp and sometimes gross and required great difficulty to obtain.
Anyway, I got everything done and finally got outta there 3 or 4 hours later, blisters on my fingers, etc, etc.
Today I returned with 8 gallons of water and to re-cover any that needed it...but most of all to make sure that the patch was okay. And as can be seen in the first pic above, the patch is doin' A-Okay. It was only minimally uncovered too. In the last two pics is shown what shocked me just before leaving...more pins! And which look to be allenii. I had one more gallon of water and gave it to 'em, but had no time to grab enough leaves to cover 'em.
It'll be an awesome sight when I return shortly and uncover the cyans...if they survive. (On Monday the landscapers stopped just short of the section and it doesn't look like the've come back yet.)

I think that place is still too dry. Last season I hunted it a little bit and found a few small patches of allenii, and someone else's previously discovered cyan patch fruited again, but in general it was unimpressive. It seems to be one of those places that has its irrigation on so low, that more sustained periods of rain are required to make the patches fruit, or at least fruit well.

Oh, no, it's quite the opposite here in the Bay area. Many patches and not so many people hunting 'em. You'd be surprised. (Golden Gate park might be an exception, but I wouldn't know...I've never been there during mushroom season.)

I often wondered this last season as well,
is david the only one out and about finding things or is it just nobody else bothering to look yet?

In my experience Golden Gate Park has been a waste of time over the past few years. There are actives, but few and far between. Lots of other mushrooms so it's still a good practice area for hunting and identification generally. Gotta keep those cap spotting skills sharp. Last year the landscapers put down a new style of yellowish woodchips I hadn't seen in the area before. Curious to see how the new chips perform.

David: can you point to a general area in Berkeley? Should I go to hill side? Or some local parks? I really don't see too much office building in Berkeley. Thanks a lot.

Go back and read the forum rules. You can't ask questions like that. It sucks but it serves a purpose.

Berkeley's the land of small woodchip beds. There's no particular area within Berkeley that's more likely than others right now. You just need to keep going, hunting for those rare woodchip beds with moisture.

I think some people are looking but it's mostly known patches that are fruiting. I'll be going on a bike ride in the North Bay today, hopefully the shroomies are still poppin with this heat.
