We had a good day south of SF, first allenii in a patch of ice plants:

Some were a little young, but it's hard to resist when you won't be going back...

Found more allenii in another weedy spot, then small littering of cyans in a grassy area:

The cyans drying, with a few of the allenii at the bottom of the frame:

These are more than we found all season last year, about 7-8 ounces wet, so it felt pretty good.

I have noticed a lot of eucalyptus leaves in pictures of peoples finds in the bay area. Is that a coincidence or do people tend to find a correlation between actives and eucalyptus?

Here's my haul for the day. I'm embarrassed to share any additional photos because this patch totally sucks. Chomped on by slugs, dirty, covered in trash...

There is a minor correlation between Psilocybe and Eucalyptus.
I remember Alan Rockefeller said in a post a long time ago (and he can chime in to correct me) that Psilocybe and Eucalyptus are slightly correlated because:
- In major parks, when a tree dies or is no longer desired, the standard protocol from landscape management is to chop the tree down, grind it, and then distribute the wood chips across the park as mulch.
- Since Eucalyptus are common in the Bay Area, and particularly in parks, Eucalyptus wood chip is quite common.
- Since Eucalyptus wood is a good substrate for wood-consuming Psilocybe, they often co-exist.
It should be noted that Psilocybe are not mycorrhizal with Eucalyptus or anything like that. The correlation is essentially because the trees are very common. Looking for Eucalyptus trees would be less fruitful than looking for ideal microclimates that have wood mulch.
That was a lot of words to basically say, Eucalyptus trees are an indicator (since Psilocybe grow on their mulch), but a very minor one in comparison to the big indicators (temperature, humidity/moisture, substrate, exposure, microclimate, age of mulch, etc.).

How are you drying your shrooms? When I see a rack like that, it makes me think that you're putting them in the oven--which I hope you're not! Wouldn't want you to spoil them since they don't do well with heat.

Keep the heat low. 100 degrees is fine, even possibly unnecessary. I generally just dry them with a fan @ room temperature.
I made the mistake of attempting to dry fresh ones with light heat (nothing too hot to touch) and got them just a little too hot and they went dark on me. Happened really fast too. I don't risk it anymore. I found that lots of turbulent air for a long time is the best.

I don't call the smell "garlic". It's kinda like black pepper, very spicy. Whatever the smell resembles, it's so unique to me, I just associate it as the smell of Psilocybes.
I definitely smell them when I'm up close and harvesting, but never so much that I could smell them nearby while walking around.
I quite like it. It tingles the nose a bit.

It has to be some sort of plant. Its def not the Psilocybes (i dont think). But yeah weird. I'll be walking in habitat and think to myself "oh i must be getting close to a new find."

Woah woah am I the only one that twists and pulls? No stem butts and the mycelium is totally fine. Scissors aren't needed 100% of the time. If it's really public I don't have time to look sketchy slicing wild mushrooms with scissors I will twist and pull.

I get this all the time. It usually means I'm finding great habitat, not necessarily psilocybe mushrooms.
Though my last Marin find I had this same feeling about 5 mins before finding my biggest cyan patch ever. Placebo? Maybe. It's more fun to think its divine intervention.

I stick them in the oven, but don't turn it on. The pilot light keeps it slightly warm and they dry slowly. I would never attempt to dry them with heat. I did make black spots in the center of a couple last year, but it was from putting them in the freezer before they were completely dry.
Also, drying in the oven keeps me from poking at them continuously which probably doesn't make much difference in how they dry, but helps me feel less obsessive about it.

Let's get real. How many of you actually bring woodchips with you to add onto existing patches?....
No need to bring wood chips when there's already wood chips near the patch ....If I tore up a small section of the myc when harvesting, I'll cover that section back up with a handful of chips grabbed from the same spot/area that the patch is growing. (or is it ideal to actually bring fresh/clean/pressure cooked chips?)

mycellium still attached, with the idea of inoculating chips in my yard.Might it work?
If you plant it in a protected spot and keep it moist all summer there's a very good chance it will.....
Last spring I planted several handfuls worth of allenii myc and woodchips in three different spots, in a natural riparian habitat...and this is out in the valley where temps are typically around or above 100 all summer, I didn't water any of those spots all summer long and they are all fruiting right now.
Keeping the spots moist is certainly ideal, and if I lived closer to these patches that I planted I would have been watering them as often as I could...but just thought I'd mention that because I was surprised how well allenii myc can survive several months of being bone dry and in a hot environment and then start spreading and fruiting once the cool/wet weather comes back around.

Can't say I do....And I'm one that's always been pretty into and aware of subtle smells/aromas, I'm almost obsessed with smells .
....all I ever smell around my patches is that bright fresh & clean aroma of mycelium.

Any good spots in the North Bay you guys know of? Anybody seen P. Allenii anywhere in the Marin area? I've been peeping wood piles everywhere but haven't seen the beautiful specimens some of you have collected yet!
How much longer in the season do you think they will be popping up, and what are some good places I can go (SF or otherwise) hunting?
Any tips are appreciated, I'm super new to hunting, thank you.

Got a question for yall. I have a plastic pint container that i through some stem butts and wood chips and cardboard in and it is rife with mycellium! How is it best to spawn this into an environment? Do I just dig a little underneth woodchips and throw it in?

I went for a bike ride yesterday around a bunch of spots that I know about. Within 2 minutes, I found the biggest patch I have seen all year in a spot that never produced in the past.
 Boo-ay! Beefy Alleni.

Then continued to find more in about a third of the spots that I have spotted them in the past.

Overall, a very good day in the Bay!
