I lived in Sunnyvale for many years and only found a couple spots there - I think if you are looking for actives, driving to San Francisco or at least Brisbane would be well worth your time. The weather patterns south of San Mateo or so are very different - a lot drier and less mist and fog drip. If you are traveling to look for actives go even further north, for example take 101 to Sir Frances Drake towards the coast, and check all the wood chipped spots you see.

A lot of people are planting spawn these days - more than ever I think. I planted several patches yesterday, and got an ID request email from a girl I barely know asking if she had found cyans in SF. She had, and it was a spot I planted 3 years ago.
I think as awareness of Psilocybe grows, more and more people will plant spots and they will become much more common than they are now. Looks like I will be leading a hunt with the San Francisco Psychedelic Society on Dec 24, and I'll be sure to tell them all about planting new spots. I'll post details on that hunt in this thread when they are available.
I don't grow mushrooms, so what I do when I find a new patch is to rip up 5% of the mycelium and replace them with fresh wood chips. Then take the removed biomass and plant them in all the other newer wood chips around, usually within 100 yards of the original spot. That way the patches expand instead of dying out when all the chips get eaten. It's been really effective, now when I go back to areas that used to have them I find lots, but several yards away....

I like the term "Rip up". After all, that is whats happening. Sometimes i will make screaming sounds until i fill the gaping maw with new chips. (Not really out loud. More to myself) Nice finds SFBA/N.CA

Have any of you seen them go head to head with ovoids? Ovoids are the most invasive thing up here in the PNW. It's unreal how huge the patches can get.

Thanks for the ID Alan. Saw that species all over the place yesterday.
I haven't seen ovoids here in the bay yet, but I can place ovoids at this spot as well. My gut instinct says allenii are more adapted to our climate (just by number of patches). I have a feeling it's too dry here. Next fall we can see if allenii or ovoids won the battle.

Finally got a little harvest from one of my patches...felt good to finally have some fruits to pull out of my bag and lay out to dry while listening to some tunes.
Saw a whooole bunch of new pins making their way up at this spot too, but the worse timing for them to pop up now with temps down to freezing and dry air in place for the next several days. If there was a bunch of leafs in the area I'd try to pile em' up over the patch, but there are none. I remember some of my patches making it through a few nights of frosty mornings in the past, but I have a feeling all these pins will abort & stop growing.

im done hunting for the season. the number of fruits collected is absurd. Let me know when your ovoid potter starts popping up SmilingPolitely. Some of these new spots have to have ovoids too.

From Today:
I've found prob 20 diff species but can't seem to find any actives like you guys, guess I'll have to head to SF for a day and hike around....I live next to Martinez/Pleasant Hill Area and just driving around I can just see patches and patches all over in wood chips but here never actives...so ya, gonna hike into areas far away off trail next week and see what I can find.
These are from today:

Looks like an inactive Gymnopilus species and maybe a Pholiota species. Hard to tell because I'm on a phone at the moment.

I haven't officially picked a spot yet but I am thinking SF. Open to suggestions for places a large group could gather. I hunted a few hours in Golden Gate Park today and did not see any actives, so probably not there. Did see actives in some other parks in SF.
Droope, many of yours look like Gymnopilus sapineus.

So I think I finally had some luck today,is it possible to over pick a patch? I only took about 1/3rd. I did pulls some with mycellium still attached, with the idea of inoculating chips in my yard.Might it work?
I will try this from Alan Rockefeller "I don't grow mushrooms, so what I do when I find a new patch is to rip up 5% of the mycelium and replace them with fresh wood chips. Then take the removed biomass and plant them in all the other newer wood chips around, usually within 100 yards of the original spot. If you plant it in a protected spot and keep it moist all summer there's a very good chance it will. I don't think you can over pick a patch . If you leave them there they just rot anyway . I put my fingers around the base and twist out the stem butt . I've seen pins form and grow out the holes . All the patches I've cultivated died anyway if I didn't give them fresh chips , spreading the chips around is the best thing you can do .

All this talk about removing or disturbing the mycelium is causing me cognitive dissonance...
In one camp, we are told to respect the mycelium, taking care to damage it as little as possible. We are told to harvest the Psilocybe by cutting or pinching from the base of the mushroom such that its substrate is left intact.
And in the other camp, the deliberate disturbance of the mycelial mat is encouraged if with the means of distributing this mycelial material to additional habitats.
That brings up the big question. Should we be clipping or tearing the mushrooms?
I completely understand the rationalization for either behavior.
With the mushrooms torn from ground, any excess material brought up with them (including stem butts) could effectively be planted all around. If done in a controlled manner, this could yield additional patches.
I have made attempts at distributing Psilocybes but so far (3 years trying, granted ineffectively) I have never seen any of my attempts yield fruit (although I have seen mycelium). Maybe the microclimates I'm working with are just not ideal (dry, inland).

Let's get real. How many of you actually bring woodchips with you to add onto existing patches? I've never heard of it, unless it was in someone's yard. I can see inoculating a patch in a public place with seeded chips, but adding fresh chips seems absurd.
I've only ever found patches in wildly public places and if I was caught dumping a substantial amount of woodchips onto landscaped areas, I'd get the cops called on me. I'm trying to imagine, MAYBE I could get away with adding chips if I knew they were the same color/wood, but the logistics just don't work in my mind. And different woods suspiciously mixed in a public landscaped area is just really bizarre to me. It would draw attention to the patch, which I wouldn't want to do.

I would never clip , the stem butts you leave in just rot it doesn't do the patch any good , twist and pull them out without yanking up big clumps of mycelium get the butt and the roots and then fill the holes with fresh chips .

Right on, thanks for the reply. This patch does have a very large chip pile very near I will be spreading them when i harvest the rest of the fruits.Just got a dehydrator running it @ 100f can I go higher? Do I need to? https://www.shroomery.org/forums/images/icons/thumbs_up.gifhttps://www.shroomery.org/forums/images/icons/peace.gif
