I haven't been taking nearly as many photos this year as I normally do. I don't have a camera at the moment and I don't really care for taking pictures with a phone. Anyway, here's some of what I have seen around the central valley this season...
Psilocybe cyanescens

Psilocybe allenii

Gymnopilus thiersii

The gyms were a surprise for me. I usually don't find actives outside of urban environments around here, so I was stoked to find those on a downed oak tree near the river.

Those are Stropharia ambigua. They are interesting because they have crystals at the base of the stem which look really cool under a microscope if you use polarizing filters. Here is a pic I took of the crystals at the SF fungus fair two weeks ago: http://mushroomobserver.org/263263
They are also said to taste like whatever substrate they are growing on, so it would be interesting to try growing them on garlic or cannabis or something with a strong flavor.
The season is really good right now, it's definitely time to go look for new patches. Yesterday I saw lots of Psilocybe allenii in Sunnyvale and P. cyanescens in San Francisco. Ran into another shroomery member who saw me picking some Agaricus brunneofibrillosus on a college campus. That's the one that always grows under Hesperocyparis macrocarpa, stains blood red when you touch it and is one of the best edibles.
All of the Psilocybe patches I checked were fruiting well except for the ones that had ran out of wood chips.

Hey Californian,
I am curious about the look alike. Is it the one with the ring right below the cap? Also what was the look alike called, if you know? I am relatively new to mushroom gathering, and I only go out with my buddy who is more experienced than I am. However, for educational purposes I wanted to see if I could identify the look alike in your pics. I believe due to the way the stem looks broken it is a bit more "hollow", and the ring below the cap is not something I have seen on any cyans I have picked.
Cheers, Colma

The deadly lookalikes are Galerina marginata and Pholiotina rugosa. I saw a big patch of G. marginata on wood chips in Sunnyvale yesterday.
Psilocybe are pretty easy to ID once you learn what to pay attention to. With practice it'll take you far under a second.

It's official. You found my spot.

I don't think so. He was banned from here because he couldn't seem to stop himself from flaming, trolling and being abrasive.
