I read a similar study at some point, which cofirmed my own hunch and observations.

In my observations patches that arent picked stop fruiting. In my experience, patches where first flush is allowed to rot, typically dont produce much more in a season. These guys want to found and harvested. Maybe theres a reason psilocybes grow almost exclusively in human environments.....? Hmmm

Same principle applies to many fruits and flowers. Picking cuses plant to produce more. My intuitive hunch is that by interrupting the reproductive attempt we promt the organism to try again. And what we do when we are harvesting is removing reproductive packages.... Which is also a huge part of how they get spread around. As long as you arent an idiot in how you harvest. The more people find them, pick them, and spread them around, the more there are.

But, when you first discover a large patch, it definitely seems like an old organism whose mycelial bed has been growing for years undiscovered by us hunters....
And i have seen mature picked mushrooms left in ziplocks whose own spores germinate on the mushroom flesh and start growing mycelium on the rotting fruit. So i wonder how much unpicked mushroom fruits contribute to the expansion of a patch's mycelial network.
Do dropped spores from a patch's fruits, and spore that germinate on unpicked fruits as they begin to rot contribute to a patch's genetic diversity or is it genetically identical to the mycelium of the patch from which the mushroom fruited.
I think overharvesting can defintely effect the long term growth of a patch, but im talking about 'over' harvesting, taking fruits that havent had a chance to drop spores or taking the fruits that are past their prime, seems like some fruits should be left alone unpicked, whereas a healthy amount of harvesting can contribute to growth, just like cutting hair or pruning bushes can stimulate accelerated growth. But then again i am a complete amateur and don't know anything about anything, so thanks for all the input from you all with more experience.....
Also, i know we aren't supposed to talk about the weather, but there us this "arctic chill" moving into the bay area in monday fir a few days.... Is this gonna adversely effect the season that we are all still waiting for? Is it going to stop the season before it actually starts?

That is something I've wondered about as well.

From my knowledge each fruit has its own genetics that differ slightly from the myclieumm.

Maybe I'll ask some of the old timers tomorrow about over harvesting patches. Though most of them would be more informed on edibles, which don't really fruit the same way out actives do.

Such a horrible tragedy. Been to many a party in a funky space that would have been a death trap in an emergency like this. Prayers for the family and friends of victims. Cant even imagine.

I DJed at that Ghost Ship venue two years ago. The staircase was made out of wooden pallets and there were old pianos obstructing pathways. Total deathtrap. Hopefully they arrest Derek Ion. It's fucking terrifying thinking that could have been me caught in that fire.

Over harvesting can absolutely destroy a patch, especially when mycelliated substrate is indiscrimanately tore up. I've found many a gorgeous flush where I picked one or two adults and carefully tried to disguise the patch, only to return several days later to complete annihalation of everything with the ground churned to shit. Usually these situations dont come back. Carnage. We just have to do what we can to educate noobs and inoculate the world! I'll probably pop by fungus fair since I'm intown. Look for a cute long legged little deer-looking dog. Cheers
