Went out and did some hunting and checked on my patches...Not a single one of them are fruiting right now.
One of them had a very small flush about a month ago but other than that I'm not seeing anything, not even a single pin popping up...The only mushrooms I saw all day while riding around checking my patches and hunting/scoping out some other locations was some small/young Leratiomyces ceres that were popping up a few yards from one of my patches (I remember these L ceres popped up in the same spot a couple weeks before my patch started to pin/fruit last year, so I'm hoping that's a sign that my patch might do something in the next few weeks)
Maybe it's just a slow/late start out here in the valley because of the drought and virtually no irrigation/sprinklers through the week, but I know several of you have already been finding them out here this season, so .
Last year, around the 10th of December, I remember I was running out of room to dry the things and still had lots at each patch that I didn't harvest...Hoping I won't be empty handed this time around, but it looks like that might happen .

Found a few dry ounces worth today- sorry no pics, it started to rain and I had to be quick. I left at least 50-60 maturing fruits, to be collected in a few days. Things are definitely looking good.

sort of the same thing on my end, start of the season was nice but now its really thinned out. i don't get it, especially with the good weather we're having lately.
the only spots that are doing anything are the patches that have good cover from the sun.

I'm noticing the same. All of my finds have been totally blocked from sunlight and wind by a fence or huge building. Noticing a lot of other species out though. Maybe we're in for a late season?

Psilocybe allenii minutes ago at the Walnut Creek find where security tried to bump me out with his belly. While most of my previous finds aren't fruiting at all, this year's new finds keep fruiting and fruiting and fruiting.
TheDuder - Thanks!

David, do you ever see any spraying going on around the areas you pick? Does it it make you hesitant to pick?

i've been thinking abou spray lately.
My girl ate some the other night and got really itchy.
Then another girl i gave the same batch too, reported being itchy, after mushrooms and rum.
I cant eat em myself at the moment.
They always make me suicidal. The chapter of drugs in my life is coming to a close.
On another note, found a new small location today. Pics tommorow. Wish it was cool as davids.

Me too, mainly because I've been witnessing a lot of it lately. I assume most landscaped spots are sprayed with chemicals, and a lot of them are next to busy roads with plenty of nasty runoff. Makes me not even want to pick in public spots anymore. Better off just cultivating patches in the yard.

WhyDidIDoThis.glad you recognize and choose not to eat them. Your to valuable to this world. We don't want to loose you.
It's possible your old patches need more nutrients(Fresh wood)to produce fruit?

Probably. Thank you RB. Alot. Happy b-day man! Yeah i seen em spraying too. My 2 biggist patches have to be sprayed. Just due to their location to businesses.
I found a really sad patch the other night. It is struggling to grow and fruit. Its in woodchips heavy in fibrous bark.
Im going to gently dig it up, place it in this plastic tub, fruits and all. I want to go transplant it. There is this hillside in town, freshly mulched. No signs of any Mycileum but a few Mycena here and there.
I wish i had the know how to cultivate mass amounts of spawn. But im going to try to give this patch new life by completely moving it. Its not big, and completely isolated in a parking lot. Gotta give it more room. [=

Nice pics. You'd probably have more success leaving the patch and just cloning it via stem-butts from the fruits you mention. Stem-butts are far more powerful at colonizing new substrate than dug-up colonized woodchips.

Possibly.
But this patch produces nothing but stunted dime-sized fruits. The butts do not have much myc on them. And are very, very small.
This patch wont be missed at all. Its never been found, and its on its last limb staying where it is. Im going to put in some human intervention and help it do, what it cant.
Finding a new home. And it ont have to start from the ground up.
Im going to be entrenching circles & criss-cross patterns in its new mulch, So it can spread 360 degrees with ease.
Pics tommorow.

You don't necessarily need to use stem butts. Colonized woodchips work fine, as well as whole fruiting bodies. In my agar experiments I've found that the fastest mycelium grows from the gills, not the stem butt. So if you want to have a high success rate, use the whole mushroom.
I wouldn't waste time on that patch though. It would suck to tend to it only to find out it was bunk genetics all along.

The only way you'd get as fast or faster colonization from a whole mushroom than a stem-butt is if the whole mushroom still has the stem-butt attached. Don't forget, just a couple weeks ago you were still dispensing the advice to blend fresh mushrooms into a liquid and spray it on woodchips, a process that doesn't work at all.
