Perfect, this is something I've been trying to understand for a while. I ended up giving the patch a little water after harvesting the four larger fruits because there were at least 5 tiny little pins I could see scattered nearby that I thought could use a drink. I plan on holding off for awhile after the rains come, of course.
On a somewhat similar note, can anyone recommend the best way to spread spores taken on a piece of foil? I'm trying to (eventually) cover my yard with these little guys and I'll have spores from only four caps.

sterilize a cap full of karo syrup and some water in your microwave. let cool in microwave. Add it to a clean gallon of water with your spores. let it sit few days then use it well shaken. much better success than just mixing spores and water. gives the spores a little hand with germinating. few short cooks in the microwave is better than 1 long. Strictly my opinion based off experience. Have fun.

They'll end up looking like the ones in your hand...or worse. The humidity today will continue to be very low, further drying out the caps of most patches. With these drying mushrooms, tonight's and this weekend's rains will start the process of rotting. This is especially the case with already mature fruitings.

A few P. allenii from this mornings adventures in the north bay. I found them in all different stages. Some pins, some healthy adults, some near rotting, and some rotted. They are still out there if you look hard enough!

Just been dry for a bit, and another storm coming in. New fruits soon to come, old fruits soon to rot! (sorry I mentioned the weather)...

My bad for causing confusion...I meant exactly what Lhun just said. In fact, I was recently looking over pics from the last two seasons and couldn't believe how many of my finds were in December.

Yes they are, and thanks! Its a beautiful area, and a "new" find for me this year. I did spray spore slurry there 2 years ago, so it was nice to see things worked out. (there was nothing last year - but obviously things have changed). Many spots I sprayed never took. So it is nice to see that not all of them were wasted effort.

That's awesome. I was gunna say that those chips look new as hell. Did they get laid down after you applied the spores?...or do they actually continue to look that new after two years?

It is a well maintained public space, they put fresh chips down yearly DavidReishi. Today I made sure to spread some mycelium to nearby areas, so in years to come it should only get better.

There's not much in my area but they are still pinning and coming up. my main producer this year looks to have been raped to death or a dog dug it up, i really hope its the latter. it's such a bummer because i don't get much action in my area but oh well, the upcoming rain should be a great pick-me-up. great finds everyone, they are keeping me motivated.

Revisited the little Allenii patch I came across earlier this season... saw lots of little pins still chugging along in there so hopefully this upcoming rain will treat them well.

I've also gotta give a major shout-out to Alan Rockefeller (if he's still following this thread)! You're a boss man! I just finished watching you on the latest Hamilton's Pharmacopeia episode on Viceland.
My first encounter with Alan was a few years ago when he identified my first Psilocybe cyanescens find. Since then I've had the pleasure of meeting him in person a couple times--one particularly memorable time was during an awesome mushroom identification foray in Oakland that really cemented my interest in mushrooms. One day I hope to be as accomplished as he is in mycology.
It's very cool to see a familiar face on TV. Especially a local one from Shroomery. That was awesome.
