I think its just substrate. The mycelium would be growing on one of the gills. Kind of like it's eating the gills. That little spec looks like it's just stuck in between.

I started the season with scissors. I like to pick a small percentage of the patch, only thinning it out and taking the matures. I think I'm too clumsy for scissors. With short scissors my knuckles bang up the other mushrooms. With full size scissors I cut too much. I prefer the pinch, and I do less damage that way. I can slip my fingers through the cluster and get more of the stem, while still leaving the butt.
Nice fingernail sporish. My hands have been like that all week. I just wipe the spores on my shoes and pants.

re: humidity as deciding factor (as opposed to other env. conditions) -
If that's so, there's something else going on. I've been to a bunch of spots old and new that should be firing *something* fungal but - not even myc in the ground AFAICT. This is in SF btw.
Maybe I should start hunting over in the East Bay... [strokes beard]
Alan, you gonna be at the Fair again this year?

DavidR......
So are all these patches you've harvested so far this season irrigated/near sprinklers?

Yes, all of my finds inhabit irrigated beds, though at least the site of my biggest find this season already shut its irrigation off for the year. It's gliding with the engines off. Which is why mushroom alley, for example, which forms part of this find, has required my efforts to even exist during this dry spell.

Yep just a funny assumption as I do use scissors while collecting. This actually happened while removing the semi wet stems of semidried caps that were in danger of rotting as they weren't being ventilated properly while drying.

Shroom ally starting to look like a new smurf village. You've have had some good finds already lol... been finding decent environments, but things have been pretty dry lately and someone mentioned earlier that irrigation will be shut off for certain areas for the season which concurs with what I've been seeing. Still a lotta bugs ouchere!

Beautiful photos Alan. Here are some P. allenii pins popping up despite the heatwave.
Sorry for the potato quality.
