Hey Hey Hey!
I've bailed a few bales of hay in my day....grew up with 24 horses.
All I really know is that horses eat hay but won't eat straw. Maybe mushies are the opposite lol.

I wish my horses wouldn't eat straw. They don't eat it much as hay, but they definitely munch on some straw.

Can hay not come from wheat, oats, barley, etc? I was under the impression that it can be harvested from many different types of grass

No, it can not. The things you mentioned were grain. Grain is harvested and the stalks left behind are straw. Think like this: Rye grass seed is a very small seed that grows grass (which if grown tall enough could be made into hay, through not usually) Rye berries are a grain, in which was harvested by a combined and whose stalks become straw.

hay is grown to be hay. straw provides grains then after it's combined it is bailed and that's straw.
I guess you could technically make hay from oat or wheat(probably been tried once in human history) but most of the crop is too valuable to make it into feed livestock

Yep there's wheat and oat hay. Shitty compared to Timothy and alfalfa. At least for horses. Even too much alfalfa for horses is bad, whereas you can feed pure alfalfa to goats. Fricken goats..

Right right I gotcha. Since rye and oats and the like are grown to harvest the seed it doesn't make any sense for most farmers to make hay out of them.
Fuckin goats man. One day Id like to get a couple and pimp them to all these inner city hipsters for lawnmowers.
