Hay is NOT a type of straw.
But, no. Use straw. A very small amount of hay can be used as supplementation, but must be sterilized instead of pasteurized.
Stick with straw for now.

Wheat straw is pretty easy to get ahold of, if you look around you can find it already shredded & save yourself a dirty job!

So I was thinking about this straw vs hay thing while I was prepping grain earlier so I poked around a little bit to find out the difference because I really didn't know myself.

Here's what I found:

Hay is basically "young straw," and is more like the sinsemilla of a grass. Hay is mostly used for feeding livestock because it is more nutritious than the straw byproduct. Stamets says that hay is about 60% higher in nitrogen content and not as suited for mushroom cultivation because it's hot, this makes it more prone to contamination than straw. Hay can be used as more of a supplement than for aeration or pure substrate as with straw, but hay needs to be sterilized whereas, as you all know, straw is fine to use with just pasteurization.

Hay is closer to grain spawn then it is to straw when it comes to this hobby

This is incorrect as well.  Hay is alfalfa or grass!  You are correct in that grass hay is harvested before it goes to seed. Straw is the stem of various cereals.  This is not to be confused with the term "straw" used in the mushroom cultivation industry to describe a variety of substrates.

City stickers be quiet please.

Yes, straw is the stem left over after various grains are harvested with a combined. It is used as a bedding for animals.
Hay is a type grass or legumes that are grown to seeing then cut, raked, baled, and finally fed to animals.

Not sure if you're talking to me azur, but my dad grows hay, alfalfa hay.  Grass hay is also grown in this area.  On top of that, I'm in the heart of dry-land wheat country, so pretty aware of what straw is...so not sure why you're correcting what I said.

I was talking to anyone who didn't know what they were talking about, and no one directly.
We didn't grow much grain other than corn, so I didn't fuck with straw, but growing up in bailed 2,200 bales of hay (Timothy, alfalfa, clover, Kentucky bluegrass, and orchard grass) a day every summer.
Guess all I'm saying is, when it comes to straw and hay, I'm willing to bet I know more than most guys here or whatever Google tells you.
