Advice on how to handle this cake?
    #23709299 - 10/05/16 09:09 AM (7 years, 3 months ago)

So on the advice of people on this forum I decided to look into growing my own shrooms, but before investing my money into making my own grow kit/box I thought I'd test the water a little. Now I know premade grow kits seem to be a bit of a taboo here, but I'm new to growing and it seemed like a great way for me to try it for the first time. Since my grow will mostly be for personal use. So don't hate me too much, especially if I use the wrong terminology, just educate me and i'll get there eventually .

I tried to follow the instructions as best as I could and there didn't seem to be any contamination. My cake is now beginning to fruit, but the problem is that for some reason so far it's only fruiting at the bottom of the cake and so far nothing at the top. Here's a pic:

Is this normal? Is there a way to remedy it if there is? Maybe by flipping the cake to allow them to grow easier?

If it is normal what's the best way to pick them? They seem to be trapped between the cake and the container. I'm not even sure if I can technically touch the cake without contaminating it.

Thanks.

Wow dude you're suffocating them, get some holes in the terrarium.
In regards of where the shrooms grow its best to leave them where they want to grow imho. I flipped my once, caused to abort them.

There isn't technically a lid or anything. It's in a  bag with a vent in the bag. Here's a pic:

Do you mean put holes in the side?

One of the many shitty things about these kits is they give you this abortion of a fruiting chamber.
There is no way you are going to get enough air exchange in that.

This is what you should be fruiting cakes in:

If anything, don't take all my advice seriously, not as experienced as many of the guys here, the cake looks suffocated, because of the aerial mycelium it's grown. If I was you I'd check out bottle tek or chronic tek. Might've even do it invitro. If you're doing one cake. If not, an sgfc will do.

They grow near the bottom because conditions are right at that area. Yes put some holes in the bag. If it's fully colonized, you can touch it without contaminating it.

That's fine, I'll take any advice I can get. The bottle teks look like something more my speed. Thanks.

Any ideas for a simple solution so I don't have to abandon the grow without building one of those chambers? Unfortunately I'm currently not in a position to get the parts to make one of those chambers. At least not this month anyway.

This is your grow kit? Man, the ones ive seen actually give you a tub of bulk substrate, not a single cake.

Money isn't the issue. I have a family member living with me for the next 2 and a half weeks. I doubt I'll be able to come home after work and drill holes in a tub without him asking questions.

lie and say you need a chamber to dry stamps in because you are now a stamp collector.
or tell him to shut the fuck up.

and if you need to use the bag thing, please poke some holes in it.
mushrooms will pin when they have fresh air and moisture evaporating
off the surface of the cake. not going to happen all sealed up like that.

If you have pins in the bottom, and not on the top, you can turn the cake over.  But you can only do that and possibly grow your pins out well if you correct your cakes breathing problem.
