Opinions on Mushroom Cultivation Workshops?

I've had moderate success with growing mushrooms from several mushroom kits, but I have never attempted to grow them from "scratch". I'm a professionally trained chef so I have a great passion for growing my own food especially mushrooms. My end goal is to be able to "clone" and economically grow various types (including exotics ones) of mushrooms on a domestic scale, such that I will never ever have to purchase mushrooms from a store again.
I'm considering going for a 2-day crash course on mushroom cultivation, but it costs $550. I've done some research and these courses all cost around the same. I'm more than to spend that money for a life-long skill, but I just wanted to get some opinions from all the veterans here.

Should I learn to cultivate mushrooms through this forum and online resources OR should I invest on actually learning how to do it face-to-face with an expert?

A lot of people get along just fine using the shroomery as their guide.

You have everything you need here. If you are looking for goods books I think you can read the works of Stamets and if you want to see an expert, I recommend you watch RR's videos

I wouldn't spend the money on it to be honest. This website is such an amazing resource.

I designed that course, and used to teach for Milkwood...although they've largely edited me out of their old blogs. They even claim to have personally taught the course for the 3 years I was teaching it! They don't grow commercially, they buy spawn for courses, and they've shafted a bunch of teachers.
I run a small mushroom farm, and I still teach via forestfungi.com.au Several of my students now also have commercial farms, and teach. My advice, if you're going to do a course, do it with a serious grower, not a confidence man.
Courses can be great for some people, as they see and do a bunch steps in the process, which makes it real, compared to reading. And you also get cultures, a network of fellow growers, and some supplies.

Oh my goodness! You run ForestFungi??? I have been following that website for sometime, and I was actually first considering doing the course, but I didn't know where it was based. Where in Australia are you located?
Is this the course you are referring to? https://forestfungi.com.au/collections/mushroom-courses/products/correspondence-mushroom-cultivation-course
I don't mean to make you market to me or anything, but can I assume that your course offers just as much as the Milkwood course?
If you're located in Sydney, I'd love to book a face-to-face lesson, especially when it's run by someone from this community.

We're in Tassie now, which makes it a bit harder to run courses on the mainland. We're working on a few dates. Looking at Vic, ACT, NSW and Qld, between Nov and next April.
Their course is probably good. I give students ongoing support, knowledge based on experience, and cultures and supplies to get started.
I learned heaps from this website. Get a pressure cooker and get started.
