Identify mushroom help
    #23709135 - 10/05/16 07:44 AM (7 years, 3 months ago)

I'm not an avid seeker of mushrooms but dabbled with a friend in my youth who was.  He found and identified all of our mushrooms. I lost touch with him and am hoping for some help identifying the brown mushroom depicted below.

It was growing near others of the same type on the periphery of a grassy hill where water gathered at the bottom in a suburb of Portland, Oregon.

I remember that classic witch's hat cap, and that's what motivated me to find this message board and post a picture of it.

I was out walking my dog, not looking for mushrooms.  They're growing 50 ft from my building.  I'm not sure what that white fringe at the bottom of the cap indicates.  I didn't make a print because I threw the mushroom away thinking it couldn't be that special friend from my youth.  I can go pick another one and make a print if that helps.  No blue bruising.

Cortinarius subg. Telamonia. Might be C. brunneus cluster.

Thanks.  I figured it wasn't what I had hoped, but now this is all rekindling that desire to find the ones I'm looking for.
