Its a matter of life and death, a roll of the dice
Are you sure you don't have anywhere to go? I would offer to house you but a hotel would be cheaper than a plane ticket

I don't mean to be a dick but as if people will turn you away from fleeing a huricane. Go to a hotel and gtfo of there. Subtle differences between countries but when there were the fort mac fires up here people were taking in strangers into their homes. Try at least don't stay man.

I would try to find a place too if they say its going to be that devastating. When hurricane juan hit we were struck pretty hard. Going without power or water for 2 weeks or more as well as buildings toppeled and roads torn up by gigantic tree roots. There was no evacuation required but still pretty crazy. We havent had a real big one in this area since.

On a smaller scale...my city had a sudden snow storm and stranded people in the centre of town in the early hours. The fancy hotel in the centre opened its doors to bedraggled party heads from all over the area until it was safe to travel.
I assume people will be kind. You could try couchsurfing.org. if your not a member pm me i can give you an online connection reference

By riding it out you do realize the storm will most likely cause outages to power and possibly water. No electricity and possibly no running water for an undetermined amount of time sounds only fun if I am camping on purpose.
It would be ridiculous to witness a powerful hurricane in person

We diddnt have power for 2 weeks after a hurricane. Tho we diddnt expect it to hit as hard as it did at the time.

Yeah, I've run around in a couple of big ones, but always inland; being on an island or boat would be wild.

If you can get a bunch of water and non perishable food, and really don't think your building will be destroyed, I'd say stay.
I mean it could be a few weeks of living in a disaster area, but imagine the experience. Being right there in the thick of it, and seeing the aftermath is something very few people get to do.
Just make sure you have enough supplies to live for a few weeks, but keep it on the downlow since there may be other folks that did not prepare. A way to defend yourself might also be nice to have, plus a bicycle to get around a bit.
Hell, I'd stay without much hesitation, but I'm also not overly attached to continuing life as a human being.

Some people go down to OBX just for this. In my opinion the bad outweighs the "exciting," sticking around for a hurricane isn't going to make your time very memorable, you'll probably just be stuck in your room weathering what sounds like a really obnoxious japanese noise band. The only reason I would stay is if I had a lot of resources and such to help with the damage afterwards, but putting yourself at risk is only creating more potential for spending others' resources getting your ass rescued

Evacuation is for a dangerous situation. How do you know your building will be safe? Water + electricity and broken power lines is bad. Debris can crash against you windows and no amount of wood will protect it.
Get out now otherwise you will die alowly and painfully.

I live in an elevated apartment. By the water, but it won't flood and it's made of cement. I only have enough plywood for one window.
So how important is it that I evacuate? I know some people who aren't , but everyone is saying they're dumb. The way I see it, I wont't die, and nothing bad that can happen will be prevented by me not being here.
Hey man. I'm just south of you and I'm not leaving. I need to be here incase flooding gets too bad. I have a shit ton of non-perishable food and water. My gas tank is full. Propane tanks full. A few hits of acid if I need it. I'm good. Plus, this storm not gonna devastate this area like people think. Social media fags blowing it out of proportion. Just be prepared to not have power for a day or 3 and you'll be good.

If you were any farther north I'd say ride it out. But on that island you're gonna get slammed. Call the red cross and see if they'll help you get a room or some place to wait it out inland.
You miiight be okay if you were in the interior part of the island. But you're going to have bad flooding that will come very fast. If your building is tall and secure enough and you had a good stock of supplies I'd say you could wait it out. But I'm imagining if you can't afford a hotel room you probably don't have much supplies. My advice is to leave and get as far inland as you can, if you have to sleep in a school gym. It's better than getting hurt or worse.
Good luck whatever you decide op

Mandatory means mandatory, not maybe..Don't risk emergency responders' lives trying to save your dumb ass. I'm sure there are inland shelters to go to...like someone else said..call the red cross. This is a powerful hurricane but it's slow moving...so you may have another day or so to see how it's track is anticipated.

So, I'm in Broward County, and I think the "Cone of Death" is pointed right at us now. I'm not leaving and I live near the beach. My apartment also has Cat 5 windows, doors, and I'm on the 2nd floor, so there's that. I've got enough water, alcohol, acid, shrooms, and weed to get me through the next few days.
@Sonic Titan - are you referring to Wilma? I was here for Wilma. We didn't expect that she would be as strong as she was. We didn't have power for 10 days, but the National Guard came around with ice and MREs. It wasn't terrible, but I recall it was rough getting the smell of charcoal out of the house. The windows were always open and since we had to grill everything, the smell came in. It was a tad musty too.

My farm and lab got broken into around easter. I've spent all summer getting back running and things are popping. I need to be here incase something happens. If shit gets too bad, I've got a 4x4 excursion with a full tank and a farm in the mountains to head to. I've just worked to hard recently to dip. Besides, I was on a search and rescue team when I used to go caving all the time. I can handle my own.

I'm already on a friend's couch, I dont know anyone in an area not affected by the storm. The building is 14 feet up but idk how sturdy it is.. No stormproof windows or shutter of any kind. A lot of people in the complex are staying, they think it's an exaggeration. I'm gonna wait a day and see if the storm looks any worse but I think i'm gonna take my chances here

Exaggeration? Do you live in some kind of special needs community?
I've seen tall trees with deep roots ripped out far inland, by storms much weaker than this one. Telephone poles toppled, houses and city blocks utterly decimated, cars flipped.
That's inland, there's a good chance your building will survive, there's also a very real chance you'll all die.

LOL...yeah...I saw lots of aggression over at the Home Depot. Everyone has lost their damn minds.
For all the fights that happen before the storm, there's a lot of good that goes on afterwards. We help each other out. The key is to stock up on basic supplies in June like water, liquor, xanax, and Chef Boyardee to avoid the crazies at the store.

Agreed, it helps a lot to stay stocked. Just like buying your winter gear in the summer. That's one disadvantage to being a drifter.

The storm is projected to drop from C4 to C1-2 by the time it hits him, but being on an island without real preparation in 100mph winds is dangerous. He'll probably be fine but its a roll of the dice.
Personally I enjoy the big storms, the cane will still be C4 when it hits out here, things are going to be crazy, but there's a few dozen miles of insulation so its not as dangerous.

Top wind speed out here is estimated at around 54mph, basically only catching the border of the storm

Here's a tip I learned working for a cell tower company for nearly a decade:
In case of a major storm or something, DO NOT CALL YOUR LOVED ONES TO SEE IF THEY'RE OKAY. Send a text message. The tower will not stop trying to send the message until it's been delivered. If you call, you will not get through because everyone is calling and emergency services are also tying up the lines.

For all the fights that happen before the storm, there's a lot of good that goes on afterwards. We help each other out. The key is to stock up on basic supplies in June like water, liquor, xanax, and Chef Boyardee to avoid the crazies at the store.
Its a literal shitstorm!

This is happening where I live...

The guy was already so drunk, he ran into the door instead of opening it just as I snapped the pic.

man hilton head got fuckin slapped. I still shouldve stayed. My neighborhood did fine but the big thing now is waiting for all the trees to get off the road, and considering theyre not even sending workers out there until later, that probably wont be for awhile.

It would have been cool if you stayed and gave us moment by moment updates of your last terrified hours and live video of your legs getting eaten by 'cane sharks
But evacuating is the right move obviously

the townhouse i was in was 14 feet up and people in the neighborhood said all the buildings did fine. But there was major flooding in a lot of areas and trees are scattered across all the roads. Probably wont be able to go back for at least another 2 nights. And that would be in the best case scenario.

I lost power for 8 days in this storm. Something like 5% of all the trees In the DC area were knocked down in 20 minutes. $3 billion dollars in damages from a thunderstorm,.

Thanks for sharing koods. Now next time I can get into a meteorological history rant I can include that one.
