Drinking coffee.
    #23708150 - 10/04/16 09:03 PM (7 years, 3 months ago)

If you are drinking coffee and you drank one.  Then, it feels like you drank 10 coffees.  Is the coffee strong even if it is just a medium roast, or
can it be that my coffee tolerance has decreased in the last year?

Lots of sugar, honey, milk and other stuff.

I think roast has more to do with flavor than strength.

True. Dark roasts usually have less caffeine because they have stronger flavour. Lighter roasts can often require more beans to make a cup.

ive read that darker roasts have higher caffine content

I know certain beans are just super potent just like certain buds are super dank and one hit makes u super stoned.

I think that way, but it may have to do with the beans.  I think you're right.

If caffeine is what you want, go with deathwish coffee, shit will put your through the roof.

I drink two huge cups of coffee every morning, not deathwish though, but still the stuff is strong.  Anyway, I tried to switch to tea not long ago, but couldn't do it, the l-theanine in the tea was to relaxing for myself, had to have that coffee rush to wake up with.

Coffee, FTW.

I thought lighter roasts had more caffeine though, I spoke with a roaster several years ago, and they told me the lighter roasts had more caffeine.

I don't know if it is the caffeine that I really want.

Maybe it just the most beans and froth possible.  If there are more beans then this makes a richer taste, right? even if it is just a medium-dark roast.

That isn't fucking why though.
It has to do with bean density and weight, and if you measure your coffee by weight or by scoops.

not sure if it's been said yet, but...the lighter the roast, almost always the greater the caffeine content

i.e. medium roast has more caffeine than dark roast; light more than medium

sugar and honey?  wtf?

that combined with the milk might be why you're thwacked out

Yup, the same bean as a lighter roast will have more caffeine than a darker roast. Some caffeine is destroyed during the process.

Freshness makes a huge difference, as well as with flavor. Drink whatever kind of roast you prefer (light are acidic/tangy and bright, dark are rich and more purely bitter), buy fresh beans and only grind enough for that sitting.

Alas I am super sensitive to caffeine and because of that can't really enjoy one of the most delicious beverages in the world: Tanzanian Peaberry Coffee.

The darker the roast, the lower the caffeine, as roasting breaks down caffeine into, essentially, flavors. Choose 100% Arabica coffee, Rubusta is crap and has more caffeine.

Its better to drink half a cup of strong coffee than a full cup of limp coffee.

In my view it rapes the coffee so I won't, but drinking coffee Portugese style (half coffee, half hot milk with foam on top) eases the blow of the caffeine content.

The roast doesn't matter, having a good bean is good for flavor, but what really determines a good cup of coffee is how you brew it.

Machines are typically shite, the water just passes through the grounds...
It takes at least 5min to brew a cup of coffee, just below boiling temperature

Personally I measure grounds by eye, but err on the side of more

If you don't brew it long enough, or don't use enough grounds
You get coffee flavored water, which is what most people drink and sell in my experience

If i acctually want to enjoy a coffee now i make either an americano (espresso with hit water) or a latte (espresso with steamed milk and a scoop of milk foam on top)

the only time i drink drip coffee is for the effect when im smoking weed or something or on a weekday morning to get my fix. And thats only because my mom makes ut if ut wasnt already made it would be espresso all the way.

OP: maybe you brewed it right this time. If you dont put the grounds in evenly then the water will go through the weakest part and alot of the grounds will be basically untouched.

this is why the jar method is superior.  put grounds in bottom  of quart jar (i do a little over 1/2c grounds).  bring water to steam in a kettle, pour it over and stir.  stir once every minute or two.  let steep for ~8-10minutes.  strain

I like using a french press for this reason. It produces the best cup every time. As for coffee, I like a nice medium roast or dark roast. Generally I go to an organic coffee shop who roasts their beans in house but until I go back to the city I'm stuck drinking this Nabob crap or Tim Hortins. There needs to be more coffee variety in this shit town.

I just brew it in a cooking pot on the stove, with the heat on until ready to strain (just under boiling), ideally 10min but at least 5min

Equal parts coffee and milk  (dairy or nut), a lot of ice

French presses are pretty nice, same concept as a jar but with a built in filter

I use a French Press, with 2-3 tablespoons of coffee per cup, always tastes good.

I can't stand weak coffee, and I usually drink it black, or with one packet of stevia which isn't sweet enough to ruin the coffee, just takes some of the bite away, still tastes strong though.

When I was younger I would only drink coffee with cream and sugar, then I wanted to actually taste the beans I was consuming and try to taste the actual flavor of the beans instead of all the sugar and cream, so I quit putting stuff in it, and like it better this way, feels more natural this way, more ritualistic.

Next time put a couple shakes of salt into your grinds before brewing. That will take the bitterness away as well as smooth out all the flavors giving you a more well rounded flavor. You wont even need stevia.

Yeah, sugar doesn't mix well with coffee imo, gross
Never tried stevia

I think milk brings out the flavor of coffee though, 2 cups each mixed in with some ice, as good as any ale I've had.

Dominican republic has great coffee. I went to an all inclusive and we had a drip coffee machine in our room and they gave us really good coffee.

At the cafe and in the restauraunts it was all espresso.

The espresso that i make tastes like dominican coffee. Its awesome.

The salt works for sure and I highly recommend everyone who takes their coffee seriously to try it. I will never steer someone wrong in the methods of brewing a better cup of coffee.

Vietnamese coffee is some of my favorite.

I only use a small amount of stevia per cup, just one little packet, I find that if the coffee is to sweet, then it ruins the flavor of the beans, so the stevia is not sweet enough to ruin.

Oh, french press is really a cool thing, can't not to agree with you, even if this thread is old! I adore the taste of my coffee which is made with this stuff
I also like coffee makers with grinders like in this list from cozzy for example, they're rather expensive but very comfortable for those who prefer to make coffee from beans (as in my case) I have such Delonghi for example and it's nice for making good latte and cappuccino too

Latte and cappucino are my favourite types of coffee, as also classic espresso with sugar and milk

Im all about black coffee these days, nice full flavor and I love strong coffee. use to be about the milk but im not a calf so i stopped that shit

Sugar in coffee seems pointless unless its shit coffee

My friend use to be a barista he always made his special coffee, 3 to 4 shots and a scoop of some badass vanilla ice cream. much enjoyment

I have some Jamaican coffee atm and its so tasty, the smell fills like half the house when brewin
