How azur gets down on bags * 5
    #23708107 - 10/04/16 08:48 PM (7 years, 3 months ago)

Why bags?  Because.
They make the most sense in the big picture. Sure, they're plastic, but washing jars uses a lot of water. And water is more precious than land fill space.
You can fit more bags in a pc than you can similar sized jars.
One bag to one monotub. Too easy.
Don't be scared.
In a 941, you can squeeze in 7 or 8 bags (tubs worth), though I prefer 6 so I can run a shorter cycle.
I like to fold the top of the bag at the top of the grain line, then fold that in half and tuck it, protecting the filter from getting wet. Stack em up as your filling them and prepping your pc. Then place the folds toward the center of the pc. Other bags will keep your bags folded shut. No tape or rubber bands.
Put some Mason jars in the bottom of the pc, then a trivet, then one layer of bags, then the other layer, halfway over the space between the 2 bags below.
Here are some pics. Like this new I do 15 psi for 3 or 3 1/2 hours.

Nice!  I've been wanting to start using bags, but I've heard that's it's difficult to inoculate them in a sab, for whatever reason.

My preferred method of inoculation is agar or g2g.  Any precautions I need to take or do I just wipe down with iso and proceed as normal?

I never wipe  down receiving jars or bags, as I use them as soon as they come out of the pc and are sterile.
With an aggressive mushroom like oysters, dropping a plate in a bag is great. With cubes, one quart of spawn will do several bags, but I usually do one quart to one bag for faster colonization.
I also use lc and li in bags for stone producers.

Fuck yeah. This looks a lot easier that what I've been doing with tyvek and painters tape. I inoculate each bag with a pint of millet. Super fast colonization from all the inoculation points. I tried using bags with a SAB and it's a bitch. Definitely great with a flowhood.

Never tried with a sab. Bet it's a bitch.
I honestly feel that anyone doing this for a long time or doing a lot of it should build or but a fh. Cheap investment when you consider how much easier it makes everything.

One other thing, because particular when folding the bags, so that the very top (opening) doesn't get crinkled. This will help when sealing after g2g

I tried it a few times and it was nearly impossible, even with a tall SAB. I went all out on my flowhood build and it still wasn't all that expensive in the big picture. Yeah I always pay particular attention to how I fold the top of the bag because if it gets wrinkled it's a total bitch to seal. My impulse sealer was like 18 bucks on eBay and it's not all that good. I have to fire it like 3 times on the same spot to actually get the bag sealed. I need a better one.

I'm doing a run of bags this way tonight. Gonna try using less grain so I can hopefully fit 3 in my 25x. Got 2 APE tubs that I'll need to rotate out soon and some wellington oyster that needs to be expanded. I'm gonna try rigging up some hanging straw logs in my grow room. It's getting cold enough that the temps will be perfect for oysters, but I'm thinking I might need to throw an electric heater in there for my cubes pretty soon.

How do you make these bags, azur?

Jars are expensive, bulky, and just a lot of pain in the ass IMO.

I really dig this bag idea. I'm starting my first ever agar tomorrow, and think I'd rather do large bags than jars.

I feel stupid.

Didn't think those looked like ziplocks or anything but hey... ya never know.

Pasty plates (very quality) made with glad plastic containers, etc. never know.

So vendors sell these huh. They pricey?

Not totally. But Pasty might have a tax rolling on these. I would :pm: him 7-8 times and ask him!

Shroomsupply.com seems to have the best deals for smaller quantities. 55 cents a bag for the ones I use.
