I need HELP ID-ing... possibly psilocybe GRAVEOLENS/CAERIPULES?
    #23707259 - 10/04/16 03:33 PM (7 years, 4 months ago)

COMPREHENSIVE PICS BELOW****

Habitat:
Deciduous forest in northwestern new jersey. Exact location is at the top of a gorge, the land is somewhat marshy and wet, especially after rain. I found this little guy growing in a pile of decaying leaves along the side of the road where water has made itself a little runoff path.

Gills:
the gills were extremely small as you can see the comparison next to a penny. i did my darndest to get a picture/look underneath to no avail. definitely white underneath.

Stem:
the stem is very small, with a small ring at the base growing into the leaf this mushroom was living on. Dark blue/grey at the very base and about halfway up, the color changes to a very pure white.

Cap:
the cap is probably 3 stem widths wide. my specimen is extremely small and i am assuming, immature. it is white, round and relatively flat.

Spore print color:
i have some pictures of what i believe to be spore dust lying on and around the leaves. Its a blend of white, light brown, and slightly grey. you should be able to get an idea from my pictures. i couldn't get a proper "print" because i only had one specimen to work with at the time.

Bruising:
i don't believe i saw any bruising, the mushroom looked fairly untouched. aside from the blue/grey coloration up the stem but that looks natural.

Other information:
the mushroom was growing tucked away very well inside a damp pile of leaves on the side of the road. I believe the white coloration is due to the immaturity of the mushroom, but thats what i came here for, less assumption more knowledge. Near the mushroom there looked to be some white/grey dust growing within a couple feet.

theres one thing id like to inquire about/draw attention to. in the close up pictures of the stem there seems to be some kind of clear/white excretion on the mushroom. very waxy looking in its nature, and only one small drop.

i didn't spend the time to focus stack any of the images as i don't have access to a computer with the proper software at the moment, but i think i did a good job portraying what it looked like/size/etc. For any of you wondering as to the camera i used, it was my samsung galaxy s6 camera with a cheap clip on macro.

included are comprehensive pictures of the location, the spores i believe i found on the leaf, close ups, and a size comparison with a penny.

this is my first post so please give me some leeway if i wrote something or did something wrong here. Hope you enjoy the pics and would love know what this little creature is.
I am mainly interested in finding psylocibin mushrooms, although mycology is interesting to me regardless. If you have any advice in relation to my specific location in terms of finding them, IE what kind of landscape to look for, should i go digging through my local farmer(s) cow poop with their consent? I'm not looking for one particular mushroom but rather any mushroom that is edible containing psylocibin/psylocin.

*side note: i am not an active hunter, i had sort of a gut feeling today whilst walking the dogs. had a weird moment where my dog was intent on going back to sniff a location, not to poop or pee. he almost showed me right where the mushroom was, and once i saw it his interest disappeared. i like to believe in/take notice of odd coincidences and gut feelings. not that this is really all THAT relevant, hence the sidetone

No, but if you're not one of the world's taller people then they can be useful in the event of a sudden downpour.

Just kidding. They're not psychoactive and I don't think they are really big enough to be worth eating even if they're edible.

well thanks! this is my first successful forum post on any such website where i didn't receive a whole bunch of unwarranted flack on irrelevant information and the like. i figured the shroomery would be a more receiving group than most of the other sites i frequent, but damn that response was fast! thanks again for your help.

great. tried to be as comprehensive as possible.

most DEFINITELY a cool habitat. I used to live 5 or 6 miles away from where i am now, but the difference in nature is unreal. Out by the musconetcong river gorge(high bridge, nj) not only is it unbelievably beautiful but the creatures are unbelievably larger as compared to the surrounding area. Black bears as tall as the hood of our trailblazer whilst still on all fours.... spiders the size of my palm(FUCK THAT) even the bees and squirrels and mosquitos are bigger.

I hope this question is not misplaced, i plan on making it a post of its own, but since you seem to be actively online and rather knowledgeable, i was wondering if you could help me out.

I won't order spores or grow any mushrooms. Ive done copious amounts in the past and have taken more than a year long break, but am looking to find my own in the wild(i don't know why, maybe it'll add to the experience and enhance the takeaway)

I'm having a hard time figuring out what i should look for. as far as habitat goes, I've got plenty of places to search. expansive farmland and fields, pine forests, deciduous forests, (relatively) wet lands, dry lands, rocky areas(who knew jersey had all that covered right?) river beds, etc. I've looked up all of the psychoactive mushrooms in my area, and begun to familiarize myself with their varying levels of rarity, times of season, etc.

I'm wondering out of these listed below, where should i focus my efforts in terms which mushrooms to look for? Sorry if this kind of question isn't allowed. my main goal is to have 2 or 3 species I've got the best chance of finding(and best chance of a spiritual experience) in my general(15mi or so) area. I'm not afraid to look hard, but I'm not willing to travel. i want some of what my local habitat has to offer ya know? just adds to the..this is the wrong word but... sentimentality of the whole thing.

if it is any help, i would like to be searching between now and the winter. if the flow of life forces me to continue my search again in the spring, so be it. patience is a virtue. but more specifically, mushrooms that are growing right now.

New Jersey-

Gymnopilus junonius
Gymnopilus luteus
Panaeolus cinctulus
Psilocybe caerulipes
Psilocybe graveolens (rare)
Psilocybe ovoideocystidiata
