You walk the street with a lighter in your pocket..

A fourteen year old kid comes up to you with a smoking device and asks for a light. There is no one around to judge you.
Will you give the kid a light?
Think closely on each question, but not too long to keep your reaction genuine to what you'd do in the situation.

I'd give the kid a light in any situation; I've always got a lighter. It ain't my place to judge.
What I would do, that wasn't an option on the poll, is spend as much time as I could talking with him, getting to know him, finding out what his life is like and why he's making the choices he is.

I likely would have a serious talk with him.

Actually there is. The third option "The serious talk" covers that.
In all cases I went with option 3, yes even heroin. Who am I to judge and I'm not of the opinion that witholding him a light would save him from personal destruction.
The "serious talk" does much more to potentially save a life than the other options, even if you end up giving that light. In fact, if done properly giving the light after "the serious talk" will only fortify your harm reduction message.
When you grow up you learn from the entire world, we as the entire world should not sneak out of our responsibility of providing an educational experience.

I get ya Asante, but included in that option was 'then decide if he gets it'. My thinking is opposite; give him the light regardless, so that he's comfortable and doesn't feel judged, then have a casual, funny, get to know you chat.
I feel the 'serious chat' option would just make me come off like a condescending prick, and I know entirely how I would have reacted to someone coming at me like that when I was 14.

Absolutely not. Contributing to the delinquency of a minor, especially at my age, is not an option.
I've had HS kids ask me to buy them smokes (or booze) too, I won't do it, fuck off, find someone else. 20 years ago maybe, not today... 40 years ago I'd probably have ripped him off... . . .

That crosses the line for me too. Then you are truly enabling the drug use. Giving a light is a lower degree of severity for me, thats not really enabling especially if you tack a good harm reduction message to it.

14 years old?
No to all of them.
1. Engaging in illegal activity with a minor, which is creepy enough.
2. Risk getting an ass kicking from the parents and be known as the grown man that hangs around and gives drugs to kids.

I was just joking when I said this, probably shouldn't joke though since nobody knows I was joking, and these results are on google, don't want to set a poor example.

Once again I'm a little stunned by the harshness of the community response. I'd done half the shit on the list at 14, and would have tried the other half quite happily. I don't get why people get so uppity (like in FR's snitch thread the other day) about 14 year olds doing drugs. It's a natural exploration of the ability to change ones conscious state, something we all did, and all do, with drugs or not, in our own ways.

I dunno I've probably done it before. He didn't get the smoke from me. Who knows he coulda been sparking a J. Honestly it's not my business either way and don't really care who asks to use my lighter for a second.
I have had young kids ask me for a smoke however. Are you 18? No didn't think so get the fuck on.

I answsered no to all of it because I don't carry a lighter.
If I had one, odds are it would have been yes cause I really don't give a damn what that kid decides to do and I would probably have assumed from the start that he was already a smoker. Although, If I clearly saw that he didn't know WTF he was doing, I would have taken it away.

I partly agree.
The age of consent is largely an arbitrary number. It's like if an old man has consenting sex with a 17 year old, he'll be locked behind bars and likely stigmatized and shunned by all of society, but if she's 18, he'll be in the clear.
It's obviously silly to assume that all 17 year olds are inherently immature and incapable of making proper decisions regarding their sexuality while all 18 year olds can make proper choices. But that's how society is and stigmas like this are very unlikely to change because these ideologies are so deeply embedded into our minds.

You might feel that way about yourself, but comparitively I feel like my life has been a complete success thus far, and indulging in drugs at a young age helped me to start to see through the illusions this world casts upon our fragile minds.
There's as much chance of that 14 year old kid hitting crack and eventually blossoming into a wonderful human as there is in him becoming an absolute POS. Having good people around him is what makes the difference, and good people don't judge others in my experience; they just work to listen to and understand them.
Who knows; by letting him be and befriending the kid, you might be the one that makes the difference in his life. Some square that refuses him with a lecture certainly aint gonna do that.

I'm a smoker but this is close to my answer. 14 is young though. It's not my place to judge people's decisions, but this is a straight up child we're talking about. I'd offer it up for the weed no questions asked, a cig maybe (I can't judge, I was smoking at that age), the rest of the options pretty much no. Kid would have to REALLY convince me of his precocity/responsibility for me to consider helping him smoke DMT.
If the kid was like 17 I might be more open to some of the other options.
Great poll, asante

Yeah, who knows.
Maybe he'll get picked up by the police for being out of his mind on drugs at the shopping mall. If he didn't have a light, it may not have happened.

There's a huge difference between a toddler and a teen but you can call them both a kid .
As a matter of fact, I refer to myself as a kid all the time because it's obviously that 20 years old is a kid in the grand scheme. Usually refer to myself as a kid with people 10 years older then me . If youre 32 that's sucks you aren't a kid anymore
Yeah as far as the questions I basically said no to all those. I don't speak to children on the streeet

Back when I was 14 I smoked and was using Ether and other inhalants. It wouldnt have occurred to me to ask someone for a light, it was super secret and covert. It was my own curiosity that took me to drugs. I remember being about 10 years old reading in my brothers kids encyclopedia about Mescaline and saw pictures of visual distortions and thought OOOH I WANT THIS! At age 11 maybe, heavily into chemistry books and pyro experiments I saw the structure of LSD and was enthralled by its complexity and that there were 10,000 doses in a single gram and I wanted to MAKE that stuff.
Drugs were always a part of me, one of the things I was born for, Psychedelics and Dissociatives.
I felt so capable at that age and holy crap I was but now, looking back, yeah I was a kid basically.
How would adult me handle kid me? Would I lecture, forbid, be permissive? Those were the thoughts that came up when youtubing social experiments and stumbling on this one.
I would educate.
In this day and age 14yo Asante would be a Shroomery member and no one would know he was a kid. And probably, there are more than a few even now.
How would we handle that, as a community, if like on Bluelight there was no age restriction? Would we give him a light? I think the Shroomery would make for a hell of a lot better drug education than his peers or DARE (does that still exist?)
Just random admin musings I guess

Way to go clutching at straws man. There's nothing that links those two statements. As Rep said:

That's the same for MOST men, whether they were drug users or not. IME, the ones that use drugs early on are often far wiser than non-using counterparts at any given age past 21.

Right, and I smashed the shit out of drugs from 14-18 and still came out with an IQ of 128. Fancy backing up your argument with some case studies that chronic drug use before 18 retards mental development? Preferably not government propaganda funded ones, cause we all know their agenda already.

I didn't even start smoking weed or drinking until 18. Than hit it hard I've done basically everything you can. Slammed dope in a public restroom, smoked crack and heroin behind a dumpster in Vegas, busted up many lines on my screened phones. The list goes on and on.
Graduated with honors. Top 5% of my class out of 400 people. Drugs definitely did take my life on a collision course. But it is what it is. Batching about the 7 years I wasted isn't going to change it.
Now I'm 4 years clean of heroin and an active member of aa. I burnt my receptors out with a passion. But damn it was fun. Taking a different psychedelic 4 times a week for a solid year straight. Ah memories.

nah, no way. Kid can go find a light elsewhere(though in my state some places will actually ID for lighters....not Philly....but some places)
The only one I answered differently on was the heroin one because I'd probably feel a need to pull some kind of speech out of my ass. Honestly with the recent batch of that super potent fentanyl analogue that's been killing even more people than fentanyl usually does in the states, that would be an incredibly scary sight.

Interesting results. Weed is 50/50 and I am very surprised. I'm glad to see the tobacco votes though. You guys really need to be the generation to end this.
But I will give every man fire. The PCP is tough tho. As for the heroin, we better have a talk about how sharing is caring.
Edit- And yeah you know especially with the fent running around. I'd feel obligated to tell him if it's been killing people en masse around us.

Only if he has a lil weed. If he has a dippy, a cigarette laced with PCP, still, no, but seriously I'd tell that kid "Fuck you," though. I'd really be pissed about the weed one. That's the only reason I would let him light it.
A kid asked me to buy him cigarettes with money on him, and I told him "no." And I was smoking a ciggie.

In an ethics argument, it was the kid pushing his first. Your perception of this argument reminds me of those in the drinking/high while driving conversations who argue for it, because it's their right to do something stupid if they want to. Which is kind of true, but in no way am I morally obligated to agree or provide assistance to them. I

I didn't even make it down to the third option. But I'd do that one for a couple instead of just no. 14 is an odd age. Some 14 year olds are really mature and others are very immature. I guess you chose that age because of the borderline aspect though huh?

Ah, you are making a point about how you think some people don't ever mature, and people are not fully mature until they are mid 20's.
I was making the point that at 14 there is a jumping point of sudden maturity that happens. Some get it earlier and others get it later. Combined with a serious personality type, and an early maturity level, some 14 year old are pretty damn mature.
I don't think our points are mutually exclusive though

I don't have the only lighter in the world and whether or not I give someone a way to make fire isn't going to stop them from smoking whatever they have; they already acquired the slew of drugs OP listed, so it's not hard to imagine they would find a way to make fire anyway. So I'd probably just give them the lighter without prying into what they're smoking, and go on my way. I'd make sure to wipe it down in case they planned to frame me for arson or something.

I think I bought my first lighter at 11 for fireworks. I smoked my first cigarette before then, but wasn't a regular thing until a year+ after.
I would probably just drop the lighter on the ground for the first three, and think about my life The rest, we'd be talking, but there's a possibility. As sad as it is, some kids that age could ask for a light for their cooker

In Philly it was not uncommon to see 14, 15, and 16 year olds selling drugs in the open-air market. A lot of these kids were high-school aged, working for gangs, selling crack, PCP, and heroin on the streets. That was their job. I've bought stuff off many young kids that were of such ages.
So no, I am not shocked by it, and no it is not my place to tell them they are too young. They live a life that is completely unimaginable to most people.

Fuck yeah, if he/she seemed alright, I'd smoke it with em too (providing the risk of LE intervening was low). I've known a 15 year old to literally blow me away with their wisdom and knowledge of the world before.
It'd be rare for me to size someone of that age up (and even rarer that I even interact with someone that age) but if the situation came about (it has before) and my intuition told me they were sound I'd definitely treat them just as I would anyone else that stands apart from the sheep in this world and can think for themselves.

i see you posting at just about all hours of the day
maybe 'sleep well' wasn't the right phrase, 'have a regular sleep pattern' is more appropriate
right now, it is 3:10 am here. i should be waking up in an hour or two from a 7-9 hour slumber. however, my head is fucked, as is my body, and i'm awake posting with you

Sometimes I have funny hours yes, or I awaken with a sore back, have to stretch it a lil for part 2 of the sleep cycle, and then the Shroomery's just the thing.
Thank you for your concern and please, try to get some shuteye or at least lie down in relaxation.

are you able to promptly go back to sleep after waking up to stretch? do you have a job (or any work/income-related projects/pet projects) that require you to have a satisfactory amount of sleep to safely/efficiently accomplish?
getting up to pee is about the only thing i may have a chance at falling back to sleep after waking from. once i'm up, i'm up.
you're welcome, and thank you for your concern. unfortunately, this is beyond you or me or sleep or wake or 0 or 1. i am going to go sit in the shower for a while to see if that will relax the body and unwind the mind

I was making the point that at 14 there is a jumping point of sudden maturity that happens. Some get it earlier and others get it later. Combined with a serious personality type, and an early maturity level, some 14 year old are pretty damn mature.
I don't think our points are mutually exclusive though
Yeah, I agree, people definitely grow up a lot around that age, or perhaps in other words, the process of maturity begins around that age.
Its worth some thought as to what constitutes maturity in general

True. I'd probably just make fun of em for that and move on with my day.
Or try to "confiscate" the pipe if they seemed like pushovers. That's rare among kids these days though.

That's probably cause you're afraid a 14yr old would beat you up or stab you or something. You clearly know fuck all about bonding with your fellow humans, only an absolute fucking square would use the word 'confiscate'. True colours are flying here, you're both a bully and a coward.

Clearly, as always..you missed the sarcasm. I even included quotation marks this time.
Seriously though..
I wouldn't forcefully try to take something away from a child for the same reason I wouldn't light em up, it would look bad, and be a bad move on my part. I'm just being smart, and using my head. I hope you'll take something away from this, and maybe rethink your decision to get a child high on drugs.

Even back in my junkie days friends would want to try it and i just said no. If you want to I'd never smoke dope with anyone. Find it other than here. Same applies with little kids asking for a light. Whatever ya sure. But if they ask for the smoke get the fuck out of here. Shouldn't you be playing Pokémon or whatever the fuck kids are into these days.

If they provided a lighter I wouldn't really care, would be more concerned about them wanting to smoke crack/meth or whatever.
Weed or DMT would be fine though.

This one time I was walking to work, and this friendly kid on a scooter driving by stops and turns around, and compliments what a cool vape I have. He mentions that he used to have one, but he had to sell it. We got to talking about vapes and the skate park, and he asks to try mine. I say sure and hand it to him.
Shortly after he uses it, it dawns on me, 'hey wait a minute. This kid doesn't even look like he's been through puberty yet. He looks maybe 12 years old at max.'
I said, "Hey, you used to own a vape? Cause you look like you're in junior high still." He laughed, wouldn't tell me his age, but said in a cheeky, cocky tone of voice, "Yeah well... you see a lot of things at the skate park."
Damn what a cool kid. I was super jelly of how cool he was.

I decide who smokes and when. Only me. You have no say in the matter punk. Idc if your of legal age or not. Ask for my permission. EVERY TIME!!!
Seriously, just give the fucking kid a light. In the case of weed or dmt i just rob his punk ass (actually no i wouldn't, but it would kinda be funny, but really wouldn't) As for the other drugs, I'd still give it to him.
Kid ain't hurting me at all.
