Liberty cap vs panaeolus semiovatus ID?!
    #23703972 - 10/03/16 02:55 PM (7 years, 3 months ago)

Hello mushroom world!

Went for my 1st hunt of the season today in Fife, Scotland. Wee bit of rain over the weekend and a cold week so the shrooms seem to be showing themselves.

Problem is I am having trouble identifying the mushrooms as some of the tips are pointed and seem obvious to be liberty caps, but others aren't so pointed but are brown at the top. I think they probably are liberty caps are but would love them Id'd. Some may be panaeolus semiovatus as many were picked near cow dung?

I have put the mushrooms in 3 piles: "yes", "maybe" and "no".

Yes Pile:

No pile:

Maybe pile:

If somebody could verify I would be cheesing.

Cheers.

Many are liberty caps.    The no pile is Panaeolus acuminatus which is edible but inactive.  The last photo has 3 P. acuminatus on the left and one Psilocybe semilanceata on the right.

Thanks very much for replying!

Would you think all my yes pile are Liberty caps? And even if one or 2 arent, they are just safe(?) Panaeolus acuminatus?. They look quite similar to the sort of untrained eye like mine.

Cheers again.

Counting the down-pointing mushrooms in the first pic, 5, 6, 7, 9 and the end on the right are examples of libs. There are not many even if you do find some others in that batch, so I think this is something to build on. Once you recognise them they are abundant enough that you don't neck maybes.
