Who is Your Historical PHigure?

just curious as to some 'personal favorite' historical figures people relate to/enjoy studying/want to be.
Mine is probably Grigori Rasputin. He was a self-made mystic with a little Epicurus thrown in as well.
plus his 'exit' from this world was pretty legit and impressive.
so? who are some of history's greats in your opinion?

G K Chesterton is my history spirit animal..
i wish i was more like him but the only thing we really have in common is we are both absentminded.. he was a prolific author and publisher and all round good time..

So many great people, you can find a deep connection with almost anyone through their work, as long as it's genuine and well written. Some of the ancient Greek philosophers come to mind. Anaximander, Socrates, Empedocles etc.

Huxley & Shulgin are my historical heroes.

Greek philosophies are cool, but the philosophers' lives probably aren't for me. their daily routine would drive me crazy just sitting around thinking. doesn't seem all that self-sufficient.
there were plenty of conflicts between the states but i can't think of a greek philosophical military commander.
Their Gov't totally doesn't get the same appreciation as the Roman Empire in any social studies class i've taken so thanks for making me google a little refresher about them.
i could totally be wrong though because "what do i know?"

Currently I'm into Hunter S Thompson
I really dig his social commentary.
His ability to go against the grain, while simultaneously being intuitively aware on a primal level of which way the grain is going.
His ability to reason through situations.
And his humor. Sort of a shock humor. Exaggerating situations slightly to show the hilarious grotesque and absurd, but with more than a grain of truth.

LYRICS Honor was not just a word To knights of old who pledged their faith In love over gold, love over gold. Now they laughed at his fantasy world And maximized all the potentials to earn The middle class was too blind to see The true nobility of Don Quixote.
Oh, Don Quixote fight your way into their hearts Commit your hearts all
How unreal are the dragons he slays Is his coat of arms just an empty clich? Colossal ignorance shared by the crowd The brainless bigots cast an inhuman shroud Many hearts and minds are going to waste Liberal philosophies you wear like your clothes The modern hypocrite he don't even know Who could be proud of this blank generation Who could be proud of you blank
Sit there, sit there watching

Nice! I was actually thinking more like....
"Through the woodland, through the valley Comes a horseman wild and free Tilting at the windmills passing Who can the brave young horseman be He is wild but he is mellow He is strong but he is weak He is cruel but he is gentle He is wise but he is meek Reaching for his saddlebag He takes a battered book into his hand Standing like a prophet bold He shouts across the ocean to the shore Till he can shout no more
I have come o'er moor and mountain Like the hawk upon the wing I was once a shining knight Who was the guardian of a king I have searched the whole world over Looking for a place to sleep I have seen the strong survive And I have seen the lean grown weak
See the children of the earth Who wake to find the table bare See the gentry in the country Riding off to take the air
Reaching for his saddlebag He takes a rusty sword into his hand Then striking up a knightly pose He shouts across the ocean to the shore Till he can shout no more
See the jailor with his key Who locks away all trace of sin See the judge upon the bench Who tries the case as best he can See the wise and wicked ones Who feed upon life's sacred fire See the soldier with his gun Who must be dead to be admired
See the man who tips the needle See the man who buys and sells See the man who puts the collar On the ones who dare not tell See the drunkard in the tavern Stemming gold to make ends meet See the youth in ghetto black Condemned to life upon the street
Reaching for his saddlebag He takes a tarnished cross into his hand Then standing like a preacher now He shouts across the ocean to the shore Then in a blaze of tangled hooves He gallops off across the dusty plain In vain to search again Where no one will hear
Through the woodland, through the valley Comes a horseman wild and free Tilting at the windmills passing Who can the brave young horseman be He is wild but he is mellow He is strong but he is weak He is cruel but he is gentle He is wise but he is meek"

I started reading the book but put it down after a while; it didn't grab me. All I made out was that he was some bonkers old bloke, but I suspect there's some underlying subtlety I've missed?

Vlad III.
And also the Mayor of Cormorant, Minn. - Duke. He seems like he would be a much better politician then the dumb fucks we have to chose from, and if you google him - you can see, he is obviously more patriotic.
I've never seen a politician look better in a hat. EVER.
