Primative Skills
    #23701263 - 10/02/16 06:49 PM (7 years, 3 months ago)

Do you have them?
What are they?

Building fire, shelter, filtering water?

There are so many techniques for even the tasks above.

So, I decided to put up a thread to discuss, compare and share primative technique.

I am a primative instructor in PR. I am free to answer questions. Meanwhile I am compiling a skill set i will follow up with.

Not too many actually..it's something I've been meaning to learn though, it's pretty stupid to not learn about these things. I've spent too much time camping to know as little as I do

I might be ok post nuclear.

As far as a fire you want to use vine bark as it is dryer.  Lot's of critters around here to eat.  Squirrels , beaver, groundhog, deer.  I would work on shelter, fire, tools for cutting meat, and traps.

Funny you made this thread when you did, just got back from the woods, made my first water tight vessel using a sheet of birch bark and "clothespins" made of a partially split stick tied off at the non-split end.

I'm still fairly new to it all, getting good at making cordage, got a nice roomy teepee shingled with cedar bark, getting nice and acquainted with as many local plant species as I can, now that I can hold water outside outside my body I'm thinking its time to learn how to make friction fire with a bow drill...a daunting task but I think I'm ready.

You say you're an instructor? I'd love to have someone to bounce ideas off of.

By vine bark you mean the bark of the branches? I can't believe I never thought of that, walking around looking for cedar bark only checking trunks like a yutz

Vines really don't have branches.  There like woody ropes.  The hang in the forest and are the most dry.  It's not everywhere.

haha, sorry you had to explain to me what a vine was. We don't have them around here so I assumed you were talking about something else

Must be nice having a pre-made rope hanging from the trees :yesnod:

I'd say my survival skills are an intermediate level.. I've been camping for most of my life and have done a fair bit of backpacking and wilderness trips/survival training

Fire skills are definitely my strongest.. I've always just been a natural with fire. I can start fires in almost any condition and know many different styles depending on what's needed and how to build and manipulate them for maximum heat or max efficiency or what have you etc etc. Me and fire are tight
Shelter skills are pretty strong, I can build a few different types of shelters, could learn some more
Water gathering/purifying skills are on point. even without a water filter I could build a decent primitive water filter and then boil it. I can build a solar still, various filters
Good at making/fixing stuff. Good at general knowledge of outdoors, plants and shit.
Trapping skills are meh, could be a lot better, haven't done too much hunting. I'm not very good at skinning shit.. that's probably my weakest.
